  • One Key To Impact Investing: Start Big - Robert Rubinstein, TBLI - #641

Robert Rubinstein, 66, founder of the TBLI Group, has been advocating for sustainable, responsible or impact investing since the mid-1990s. One of the key lessons he’s learned: start big.
“I always focus on irresponsible investors and criminals. And I always communicated in their tribal language, so I only showed them self-interest, opportunity and money flows,” Rubinstein jokes enthusiastically, referring to the investors who didn’t already employ some form of responsible investing.
Those money flows were key. He says others in the space have made the mistake of focusing on the “moral imperative.” Money managers face targets, he notes. If they don’t meet their benchmarks they get fired. The only way to get through to them is to speak their language and to focus on financial returns.

  • How This Father Raised $15k For Children’s Cancer - Scott Uhland via Caringcrowd - #639
Never miss another interview! Join Devin here: http://bit.ly/joindevin.
Scott and Angela Uhland were as sad and afraid as any parents when their three-year-old Lucia was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. Two years of treatment left her healthy and starting school with her peers.
Scott always hoped to find a way to give back to the team of people who treated Lucia. He was especially fond of the caring people who structured fun experiences for her in the hospital during treatment. It made the whole experience tolerable. So tolerable, in fact, that her memories of the hospital include many positives, including, he admits, some of her favorite foods.
When Scott learned about Johnson & Johnson’s CaringCrowd global health crowdfunding platform, he realized he’d found the way he could give back. Scott is a PhD scientist at J&J. He decided to raise money for the Bass Center for Childhood Cancer and Blood Diseases at the Lucille Packard Children's Hospital at Stanford, specifically targeting their programs supporting fun for cancer patients.

  • Learn How to Build a Better Board For Your Nonprofit - Kate Hayes, Echoing Green - #638
Never miss another interview! Join Devin here: http://bit.ly/joindevin.
Kate Hayes joined Echoing Green with a clean mission in mind: help nonprofits build better boards. Too many boards are untrained, lack diversity and aren’t fully engaged. She’s developed programs to help nonprofits and board candidates alike to be more effective.
What is the problem you solve and how do you solve it?
Nonprofit boards are ineffective - members do not reflect the communities they serve, they are not active enough in fundraising, and they are not focused on strategy. Only 16% of board members are under the age of 40; 80% of board members have received no training; and 65% of board members don't think their fellow board members are engaged. At the same time, very few training programs exist, so we are stuck in the cycle of bad boards.

Founder and vice president, Russ Jundt, explains how the technology can reduce water usage by 40 to 60 percent. The systems work well for commercial and residential real estate in the U.S. and around the world.
The company, part of the Outdoor Living Brands, family of franchise companies is working to find new franchisees who want to be a part of saving this scarce resource.

  • Women in Nonprofits Seek Their Due Following #MeToo - #632
Never miss another interview! Join Devin here: http://bit.ly/joindevin.
With the support of their respective organizations, three women in the nonprofit sector are seeking to shake things up a bit to call attention to inadequate respect, compensation and opportunity.
Heba Mahmoud at the Association of Fundraising Professionals, Emily Rose Patz at Donor Perfect (a division of Softerware) and Tycely Williams of the YWCA have joined forces to bring attention to #metoo issues in a sector where at least some of us didn’t expect to find them.
Many philanthropists are powerful, wealthy men who are accustomed to getting their way. Many fundraising professionals in the nonprofit sector are women whose careers depend upon their ability to get philanthropists to open their wallets. This is a situation ripe with potential for abuse.
Futhermore, the three note that while 73 percent of all nonprofit employees are women, only 45 percent of CEOs are women and only 21 percent of CEOs of nonprofits with $25 million plus budgets are women. Women of color make up only 14 percent of board members.
Be sure to watch this powerful discussion with these three women who educate me on women’s issues in the nonprofit sector.
