On “The Drive” with Alan Taylor and Brian Moody, executive editor of Auto Trader and kbb.com, the discussion focused on the practicality of plug-in hybrids and electric vehicles. Brian emphasized that plug-in hybrids can run on electric power for short trips and then switch to gas for longer journeys. He also expressed concerns about the limited availability of charging stations for electric cars in cities like New York and potential restrictions on electric vehicles in shared parking garages. Brian highlighted Toyota’s wide-ranging hybrid strategy, including electric cars, fuel cell technology, and plug-in hybrids. He mentioned specific models such as the Lexus RZ luxury electric SUV, the Toyota CZ4X small crossover, and the Corolla Cross hybrid. Additionally, Brian discussed Toyota’s collaboration with Subaru to produce the Solterra electric SUV, positioning Toyota as an industry leader in hydrogen, hybrid, and plug-in hybrid vehicles. Lastly, Brian talked about the 2024 Toyota Tacoma, highlighting its performance and value retention. He mentioned that the Tacoma is predicted to retain 62.6% of its original value after five years, making it a compelling option due to its strong reputation and resale value. Brian also shared insight into the dealership’s commitment to fair pricing and customer satisfaction, emphasizing the importance of customer loyalty.

Lauren Fix, Editor-in-Chief for Car Coach Reports, discusses the shift towards electric vehicles in the auto industry. Car manufacturers like Toyota and Honda are adding electric and hybrid options, but Ford, GM, and Nissan are facing financial challenges. China’s dominance in mining minerals for batteries and owning battery plants is giving them an advantage in the electric vehicle industry. McKinsey and Company’s study shows that 50% of electric vehicle owners are hesitant to purchase another one due to concerns about charging times and safety. The infrastructure bill in the US includes $15.6 billion for new technology to improve highway and roadway safety, including automatic traffic enforcement..

It’s time for BJ Killeen, automotive journalist and Voice of Reason. She and Alan took a drive down memory lane as they shared memories of why they are car enthusiasts. Alan was so passionate that he decided to add a 1975 MGB Midget to his collection. They both agreed that the feeling of the engines will never be forgotten. While electric cars may have more torque, they lack the same visceral feel. The discussion shifted on how manufacturers are shifting back from electric vehicles to internal combustion engines due to low consumer demand. It was mentioned that many people are not buying electric cars, and even those who have bought them may not buy another one in the future. The resale value of electric vehicles has dropped significantly, with some dealers refusing to take them as trade-ins.

Closing the show is contributor and friend Karl Brauer, an automotive industry analyst, Forbes Autos contributor, North American Car and Truck of the Year juror, board member, and executive analyst for ISeeCars.com. Karl recently test drove the Genesis GV80 coupe in Minneapolis. You can find the video on his website or YouTube channel “KarlBrauer cars”. This SUV coupe impressed him, with its good looks and practicality. It’s powered by either a 375-horsepower engine or a 409-horsepower engine with an E-supercharger system. The interior is luxurious, and despite its sleek design, it offers good rear seat room and cargo space. It’s essentially a practical SUV with a stylish twist. This coupe version is based on the GV80, which is the largest SUV offered by Genesis. It was first revealed as a concept car in 2023 and is now available at dealerships. If you’re interested in learning about cars that last the longest, check out the upcoming study on iseecars.com. The study looks at the cars that reach 250,000 miles or more, and it’s the only one of its kind. The list will cover all vehicle types and will also be broken down by categories like SUVs, cars, and heavy-duty trucks. Stay tuned for the list of the 30 longest-lasting cars, which will be available on the site in a few days. It’s amazing how many cars, even those that are 20 years old, are reaching a quarter million miles. Newer vehicles can last a long time with proper maintenance and the occasional replacement of parts. Keep an eye out for the study on iseecars.com if you want to learn more.
