September 11, 2020Central Auckland Brass Band - Music Academy: Special Tongan Language Week performanceThis week on the Pacific Breakfast show, it has been wonderful to highlight our beautiful Tongan people, culture & language. Another aspect of Tongan culture is music & in particular brass bands. Brass bands were well established in Tonga by the 1880s and have become a strong part of the island kingdom's musical heritage. The Tongan community in New Zealand has continued this tradition with a number of active brass bands, often associated with churches or schools. This morning we’re honoured to be joined by Fakasi’i’eiki Filimoehala along with members of the Filimoehala family, who are from the Central Auckland Brass Band - Music Academy for a special performance to close off Tongan Language Week celebrations on the Pacific Breakfast Show.
