  • Decorating the Set (Interview with Artist, Noelle Giddings)
Welcome to Season 5 of Decorating the Set: From Hollywood to Your Home with Beth Kushnick!  Beth and Caroline are back for a brand new season of pulling back the curtain on the magic of making television and film, and bringing the tips and tricks of the pros right into your home! This week, the ladies sit down with Noelle Giddings, an immensely talented artist whose tremendous career has taken her from being one of the first female comic book artists to Beth's go-to artist for creating bespoke, set-specific 'cleared' art of the highest quality.
The Interview with Noelle begins at Time Code: 6:36.
    GUEST BIO: NOELLE GIDDINGS
Noelle Giddings, creator, painter and illustrator, creates set-specific, original though highly evocative, 'cleared' art for television and film. She has enjoyed a long relationship with CBS, creating most of the art needed for standing sets as well as an episode-by-episode basis for shows such as The Good Wife, Braindead, Instinct, Main  Justice, and The Good Fight. Other networks include FX  and the upcoming Y The Last Man, and the film Danielle Isn’t Real.
Formally trained at The Parsons School of Design (holding an MFA), Noelle combines sophisticated technique and craft with a broad visual literacy and vocabulary. This unusual versatility enables her to infuse each piece with the aesthetic sensibility of any period, movement, or school--from the Old Masters to Contemporary Art.
Additionally, Noelle, one of the early (and few) female comic book artists, has over twenty years experience working for Dark Horse, Marvel, and mostly DC Comics (pencils, inks, color, and covers) with hundreds of credits--among them: Batman, Superman, Aquaman, etc. A particularly proud part of her comic book history was helping to start Milestone Media, a lone company dedicated to producing multicultural comics, where as Color Editor she designed and colored the universe known as Dakota.
Noelle is also an accomplished animator having worked on the Nickelodeon series, Doug, as well as the Disney movie, Anna Karenina.
Noelle has taught art at The Cooper Hewitt International Design Museum as well as at The Children’s Museum of the East End.
Noelle’s actively works on projects ranging from Wake Board Design to Wine Labels, and has commissioned artwork in many private collections. She has had paintings shown in the juried art show, Woman Painting Woman (2014 and 2017) at the RJD Gallery in Bridgehamtpon NY, near where she currently, and happily, resides.

  • Beacon 23 Episode 8
    Beacon 23 Season 1 Episode 8 "Adamantine". Image by MGM+. Copyright 2023.
The inaugural season of MGM+'s Beacon 23 comes down to "Adamantine". In an episode invoking an unbreakable quality in its title, the occupants and visitors to the beacon each made their case as to whom the title best describes. Aster's drive to learn about the rocks she came to know as relics has never wavered. Halan's commitment to Aster, which might have looked in doubt has also shown to be unbreakable. What about the zealot Kier and his steadfast faith? As predicted, uber-AI Aleph makes a return appearance on the Beacon, and his own focus on the Artifact hasn't changed in 200 years.
Paul, Inez, and Gabby discuss this topic at length, as well as the events of this cliffhanger episode in what will be the last podcast in this series until it picks up again in April. Be on the lookout for more no-holds-barred discussion and debate in just four short months!

Suddenly, Aster remembers that she was born and partially raised on Beacon 23.
Alright. Let's just accept that so we can move on with the story. After all, many more important things happen in "End Transmission" than Aster's conveniently timed epiphany. Kier returns to the beacon, but this time he has Column hard-liners Saldana and Finch in tow to add brawn to his now religious-minded brain. While those two add a certain urgency to the events of the episode, Kier's only desire is to prod Aster's memories and eventual communion with the Artifact. No big deal.
Also, Bart tries to reconcile his own memories and the realization that Solomon, who had been the only human he'd completely respected, had erased them.
Paul, Inez, and Gabby spend their longest podcast so far this season discussing the plot as well as Bart's big decision. Listen for these points as well as predictions as to what may come in the season finale.

  • Beacon 23 Episode 6
Beacon 23 - Season 1 Episode 6 "Beacon Twenty Three". Image by MGM+. Copyright 2023.
Another episode outside the timeline concerning Halan and Aster, "Beacon Twenty Three" fills in even more of the Beacon's story. In Bart's possibly biased retelling of his own history, we learned about Dr. Ree Avalon's tenure as the Beacon's first keeper. It was during her time there that people began interacting with the Artifact. Similar to Aleph's transcendence from a couple episodes ago, Avalon's close contact with the Artifact resulted in - something. Whatever it was though, she did not return to the Beacon.
We also learned about a version of "The Shining" in space featuring a young family and the unknown and possible malignant presence of the Artifact in their lives. Bart acted as nanny and playmate for the child, Parsim, whom we learn later becomes Aster Calyx.
All of this took place as a ruse to keep a potential bomber from fleeing the Beacon after attempting to destroy it. Gabby constructs a coherent possible timeline for all of the events in this episode.
Listen for another round of wild theories from Paul, Inez, and Gabby and you'll be treated to a clash between the Vivar sisters!

  • Beacon 23 Episode 5
Beacon 23 Season 1 Episode 5 "Rocky". Aster (Lena Headey) and Halan (Stephan James) in the cupola watching Rocky's friends outside the beacon. Image by MGM+. Copyright 2023.
When you saw the title of this episode, were you thinking of the fictional boxing hero from Philadelphia? Or did you think it referred to a talking space rock? Given the wacky directions things are starting to go on Beacon 23, no one would blame you for expecting the Italian Stallion himself to set foot on the space station. Alas, Beacon 23 viewers were treated to the latter - a space rock with a peculiarly familiar New York-style accent to stir the narrative pot further this season.
Paul, Inez, and Gabby say a lot about this episode in this podcast. They probably produce more theories about the rocks, Aleph's possible use for them, and the rest of the characters (including the AIs) than could ever possibly come true, but that won't stop them from trying. In this podcast, you can expect several wild theories and predictions about what may be in store for them as the shuttle from QTA makes its inevitable approach.

Beacon 23 - Season 1 Episode 4 "God in the Machine". Image by MGM+. Copyright 2023.
With a quick jump back in time 180 years before the previously seen events of the show, viewers were given their first glimpse of the size and galactic impact of what's been happening on Beacon 23. In "God in the Machine", we met Milan Aleph, CIO of the mysterious, expansive QTA and a man on a mission to force humankind to move beyond mortality. Countering his cold, logical indifference stands beaconkeeper Sophie, a woman overflowing in the emotional expression of what it means to be human.
In this podcast, Paul, Inez, and Gabby examine this message in a bottle for clues about what it all might mean for Halan and Aster. And Bart! Especially that modern reincarnationvery of HAL.
The hosts all throw out so many theories in this one, something has to stick. You'll have to listen to find out.
