In 2007, Fall Out Boy was the biggest band on the planet. Between developing clothing lines and creating fledgling myspace competitors, they were busy. Luckily, the band found enough time to create “Infinity on High.” With a blank-check production budget, collabs with Jay-Z and Babyface, and a discarded song from a Shrek soundtrack, this album is a testament to mid aughts excess. Does it hold up? Can the Cool Guys™ put aside their hatred of Patrick Stump and see the record objectively?

Tigers Jaw released their second self titled record in 2008, and its brand of indie rock influenced emo directly and clearly influenced many of the best bands of the 2010’s. The Cool Guys ™ had somehow not listened to too much of Tigers Jaw previously, so please excuse their enthusiasm. It’s not every day you’re introduced to a classic.

The Cool Guys ™ finally get around to covering a band they probably should have got to a while ago- Knuckle Puck. This 5 piece from suburban Chicago seems to fall smackdab in the middle of the emo revival of the mid 2010’s and the more commercial leaning pop punk of the same era. In other words, this band is tight as hell. 

We covered their 2015 full length debut, Copacetic, which came out after the band grinded it out the old fashioned way- release a few well liked EP’s and open for some more established bands. You may be one of Knuckle Puck’s many fans, or maybe they’re one of those bands that, for some reason, you haven’t check out. The Front Bottoms are a successful emo band, even though the modern music landscape has turned the phrase “successful emo band” into an oxymoron. After years of small tours and various recordings,  TFB vaulted into the national music consciousness with 2013’s Talon of the Hawk. The success of that record garnered major label attention, and TFB subsequently signed with Fueled by Ramen.

Their first album on Fueled by Ramen, the hilariously titled  Back on Top, proved that signing with a major wouldn’t alter their sound too much. Their second Fueled by entry, 2017’s divisive Going Grey, felt more major label-ey, with it’s soaring synthesizers and big-budget production flourishes bedazzled some fans and pissed off some others. In Sickness and in Flames, released August 21, 2020, could not have been more anticipated by the PGP crew. As always we deep dive our favorite tracks, single out some Xanga-headline-worthy lyrics, and sound dope as hell doing it.
