On 27 September 2016, while introducing a government project to citizens of the Thousand Islands, he said some citizens would not vote for him because they were being "threatened and deceived" by those using the verse of a Quran, which leads to Islamist mass protest that took place on 4 November 2016 in Jakarta and led to his imprisonment. Today he is a free man and more than ever, this is the new start of Basuki Tjahaja Purnama.
