Beautiful People Beautiful Cities

Podcast 12 - Innovative cities - Prof Tim Broyd

Listen Later

Prof Tim Broyd is immediate Past President of the Institute of Civil Engineers (ICE) and Professor of Built Environment Foresight as well as Honorary Professor of Civil Engineering at University College London.
Prof Tim reflects on the past 200 years of the civil engineering institute.  It was started in a coffee shop with young engineers looking for a mentor. Prof Tim describes civil engineers as invisible superheroes who helped remove terrible diseases and benefited society in many ways, such as installing safe drinking water to cities.
Prof Tim also highlights how engineers have to reinvent themselves for the next 200 years, to solve the unintended consequences of development – such as climate change, biodiversity collapse and massive mental illness in our cities.
He has great advice for mentors to encourage young engineers to find their own voice.
