Era abril de 1982. Finalmente, el grupo de radistas vuela a Managua y, luego de una corta estancia, Álvaro viaja a México para coordinar la llegada de los radios comprados en Panamá y enviados por valija diplomática cubana.

A finales de junio, en la ciudad fronteriza mexicana de Tapachula, Álvaro se reúne con Meme, recientemente nombrado comandante del nuevo frente “El Brote”, muy cercano a la frontera con México. Juntos cruzan la frontera y llegan al campamento “El Pavo”. Álvaro se reencuentra con su hermana y, muy poco tiempo después, el Ejército lanza una ofensiva con tropas de élite, artillería y aviación.

En medio del fuego, Meme decide salir hacia México y le pide a Álvaro que lo acompañe. Sin embargo, a última hora cambia de parecer y le indica que apoye al capitán Ariel, quien los llevaría al volcán Tajumulco para reunirse con el comandante Aníbal en el frente “Luis Ixmatá”. Así inicia una gran retirada, con varios días de marcha.

It was April 1982. At last, the group of radio operators flew to Managua and, after a brief stay, Álvaro traveled to Mexico to coordinate the arrival of the radios purchased in Panama and sent via Cuban diplomatic pouch.

At the end of June, in the Mexican border city of Tapachula, Álvaro met with Meme, who had recently been appointed commander of the new front “El Brote,” located very close to the Mexican border. Together, they crossed the border and arrived at the camp known as “El Pavo.” Álvaro reunited with his sister, and shortly afterward, the Army launched an offensive with elite troops, artillery, and air support.

Amid the gunfire, Meme decided to head back to Mexico and asked Álvaro to accompany him. However, at the last moment, he changed his mind and told Álvaro to support Captain Ariel, who would lead them to the Tajumulco Volcano to meet with Commander Aníbal at the “Luis Ixmatá” front. Thus began a major retreat, involving several days of marching.
