Era marzo de 1983. Álvaro finalmente había puesto en funcionamiento la incipiente red de radios entre los frentes, cuando recibió órdenes de la Comandancia para trasladarse a Tapachula, donde “deberá crear un centro de comunicaciones clandestino” para el Comandante en Jefe Gaspar Ilom (Rodrigo Asturias), quien evidentemente había decidido no entrar a Guatemala.

Álvaro sintió un gran alivio al cruzar la frontera con México. Estaba cansado de la guerra: demasiadas bajas, demasiadas deserciones, demasiado de todo.

Así comienza una nueva etapa en la vida conspirativa de Álvaro, quien, de ahora en adelante, se llamará Álvaro García de Castro.

It was March 1983. Álvaro had finally set up the fledgling radio network between the fronts when he received orders from the Command to relocate to Tapachula, where he was instructed to “establish a clandestine communications center” for Commander-in-Chief Gaspar Ilom (Rodrigo Asturias), who had clearly decided not to enter Guatemala.

Álvaro felt a deep sense of relief as he crossed the border into Mexico. He was weary of the war—too many casualties, too many desertions, too much of everything.

Thus began a new chapter in Álvaro’s conspiratorial life, under the name Álvaro García de Castro.
