  • HMBT #313: Leveraging Other People’s Audiences

Leaving corporate America after 16 years taught me a big lesson: having an existing network and diverse income streams is essential. With so many professionals navigating career changes, layoffs, or launching their own consulting gigs, finding proven ways to grow without blowing a massive ad budget is critical.

To help break this down, I sat down with Stephen Somers, founder of Marketplace Superheroes. Stephen has spent 16 years in e-commerce, building companies that have generated over $50 million in sales and helping more than 10,000 students get started. In this conversation, we talk about the massive shift happening in online selling, how to tap into audiences that already exist, and why real business success comes down to simple consistency.

The Explosion of Live Stream Commerce on Whatnot

While Amazon and eBay remain foundational platforms, live stream commerce is rapidly changing how consumers interact with sellers. Stephen shared how his business jumped onto Whatnot, a platform that hit $11 billion in gross merchandise volume in 2025. By hosting live streams and auctioning items directly to viewers, his team produced over $247,000 in sales within their first 100 days.

The key to Whatnot is not being a slick salesperson. It comes down to presenting products people already want, bringing high energy, and creating an engaging, fun atmosphere. While static marketplaces like eBay still serve a purpose for vintage or searchable inventory, live streaming allows sellers to build immediate relationships and community with buyers.

Tapping into Other People’s Audiences (OPAs)

When you are starting out or launching a new service, you rarely have a massive email list or audience. Stephen explained how he generated his first sales by hanging out in communities where his ideal clients already gathered. By sharing his actual journey, offering free value, and building relationships, clients started approaching him directly.

This model applies to both product sellers and service providers. Instead of relying entirely on paid ads, which carry high acquisition costs, identify the events, groups, and platforms where your audience spends time. When you build real goodwill and solve problems without immediate expectations, you position yourself as the authority.

The True ROI of Networks and Strategic Partnerships

A personal brand and a trusted network will always outperform short-term tactics. Stephen noted that out of his career revenue, tens of millions of dollars originated directly from attending events and building a strong network. When I transitioned out of full-time employment, almost every consulting client I picked up came directly from referrals and connections I spent years building on LinkedIn.

Stephen also broke down the economics of strategic partnerships and the Dream 100 framework. Paying to acquire individual customers through ads is expensive and slow. In contrast, building a relationship with one key partner can place your offer in front of an entire established audience, creating a win-win scenario that yields long-term dividends.

Embracing Routine, Focus, and the Daily Grind

Real success in business is often surprisingly repetitive. It requires doing the foundational tasks day in and day out, even when the excitement fades. Stephen discussed how embracing business meditations, such as booking a hotel room with just a notebook and pen to think strategically, helps you step back from the day-to-day rush.

We also touched on navigating neurodiversity, including harnessing ADHD as a superpower to channel creativity, find leverage, and structure daily work for sustained progress. Consistency wins the race every single time.

    Key Takeaways:

    •  Product Does the Heavy Lifting on Livestreams: Platforms like Whatnot rely on interactive, energetic live video auctions. If you choose items with strong market demand, you do not need pushy sales tactics, you just need high energy and a clear view on camera.TXT+ 1
    •  Leverage Other People’s Audiences: You do not have to start from scratch building an audience. Find communities, events, and forums where your ideal buyers hang out, lead with genuine value, and let your expertise shine through naturally.TXT+ 1
    •  Take Regular Business Meditations: Stepping out of your normal work setting to think with a notebook and pen can spark your biggest strategic ideas. Detach from the tactical screen work to see the forest for the trees.TXT+ 1
    •  Embrace the “Boring” Routine: Sustainable success is built on doing the basic fundamentals day in and day out. Peaks and valleys are inevitable, but sticking to what works through the daily grind creates staying power.TXT+ 1
    •  Turn Personal Traits into Superpowers: Understanding how your brain works, whether managing ADHD or seeking novelty, lets you build business systems that keep you engaged without sabotaging your consistency.TXT
    • Conclusion

Building a sustainable business takes grit, patience, and a willingness to stay the course when things get tough. Business law might not sound like the spiciest topic we tackle on the podcast, but it might be one of the most critical. Too many entrepreneurs rush into the market excited to build, only to rely on advice from a friend or a quick prompt from an LLM. Before they know it, they are facing messy partnership disputes, copyright infringement claims, or compliance headaches. In this episode of Hank’s Marketing and Business Tips, I sit down with business law attorney Matthew Fornaro to break down what founders actually need to protect their livelihoods, how to stay proactive, and why the human element still matters when the stakes are high.

      Building the Right Foundation

Starting a business requires far more than heading to a Secretary of State website to register an entity. Matthew explains why assembling your core team of professionals early, including a business focused attorney, an accountant, and a commercial banker, makes all the difference. Having a solid written business plan alongside clear governing documents ensures uniform operations. When every external and internal relationship is backed by a written agreement, you avoid costly gray areas if things go sideways later.

AI Is an Intern, Not Your Legal Counsel

While AI tools offer incredible efficiency for content generation, site creation, and business workflows, relying on them for unsupervised legal or tax matters is playing with fire. Large language models are designed to please the user, which means they can sound confident even when they are catastrophically wrong. Think of AI as an eager intern whose work always requires a double check. Nuanced, regulated decisions require human expertise and accountability.

The Rise of Digital Traps: Cookies, Wiretaps, and Image Rights

The legal landscape online has spawned aggressive cottage industries targeting website owners. In places like California, businesses are getting hit with claims alleging that tracking cookies or chat bots storing data act as illegal wiretaps. At the same time, traditional threats like copyright infringement from grabbed web images and trademark oversights continue to catch business owners off guard. Getting your intellectual property protected early, including securing trademarks for programs like BIMI email authentication, keeps competitors and predatory litigators from pulling the rug out from under your brand.

      Key Takeaways

      •  Build Your Professional Bench Early: Do not wait until tax season or a lawsuit to find help. Establish proactive relationships with a business attorney, an accountant who understands companies, and a commercial banker before launching.
      •  Put Every Relationship in Writing: Whether dealing with an outside vendor, an employee, or an internal partner, always use written agreements that clearly define essential terms. Uniform, consistent rules prevent messy disputes.
      •  Treat AI Like an Intern: Use AI to optimize your workflows, but never let it take the wheel on regulated matters like legal compliance or taxes without subject matter review. If the AI is wrong, you hold the liability.
      •  Audit Your Website Tracking: Spurious claims around ADA accessibility, cookies, and chat bot data retention are actively targeting businesses. Review your privacy notices and consent policies to avoid costly digital wiretap claims.
      •  Lock Down Your IP Immediately: Protect your brand identity with trademarks and patents as early as possible. Having registered trademarks also opens doors to marketing advantages, such as setting up BIMI for verified email sender logos.
      •  Verify Commercial Image Licensing: Grabbing an image online or relying on unclear open-source licenses can lead to sudden infringement demands. Use your own media, license correctly, or leverage AI generation carefully.
      • Conclusion

Running a successful business is about playing offense with your marketing while having a solid defense in place to protect what you build. Take the time to audit your legal foundation, secure your digital assets, and consult real professionals before small oversights turn into expensive problems.

      • HMBT #311: Call Claude by its Government Name

On episode 311, I sat down for round two with Rion Haber, CSO of Catalyst Marketing Agency. We originally recorded this conversation earlier, but a tech hiccup meant the video did not capture. Rion was kind enough to return for a mulligan, and honestly, this conversation turned out even better. We walked away from rigid scripts and talked through the raw reality of AI, changing search engines, brand trust, and how modern companies actually get noticed online today.

Finding Attention When Search Flips Upside Down The old playbook of stuffing keywords and chasing backlinks does not cut it anymore. Rion pointed out that discovery has largely shifted away from traditional search engines toward social platforms and earned media. Search itself is becoming more brand-focused and lower in the funnel. With generative AI tools summarizing answers across the web, your online reputation, customer reviews, and actual public relations matter more than trying to outsmart an algorithm.

Authenticity Beats the Content Machine One of the biggest mistakes business owners make today is treating AI like an endless, generic content generator. The lower the cost of creating content becomes, the higher the value of genuine authenticity gets. Consumers and prospects can spot empty, automated copy immediately. Whether you are running a scrappy startup or scaling a mature brand, real relationships are built by showing up on camera, talking to people like adults, and consistently offering upfront value without expecting an immediate sale next week.

The Reality of Vibe Coding and In-House Tools From building custom screen resizers to connecting internal models to platforms like HubSpot, building your own lightweight tools has never been easier. However, there is a catch. Spending 40 hours wrestling with code or yelling at Claude takes you away from your actual job: talking to human beings and shaking hands. AI can handle the repetitive background tasks, but relying entirely on it to replace proven platforms or write your core strategy will quickly leave you frustrated.

        Key Takeaways

        •  Start With the Outcome, Not the Channel: Before deciding whether to throw budget at SEO, ads, or social media, clarify your actual goal. Attention follows where your specific audience hangs out, not just the latest trending tool.
        •  Reputation Feeds the AI Engine: AI overviews and modern search rely heavily on trust signals, third-party reviews, and earned media. Solid PR and happy customers do far more for your visibility than keyword stuffing.
        •  Authenticity Is Your True Differentiator: Unpolished, direct video and honest storytelling consistently outperform stiff, corporate scripts. When content is cheap to produce, being genuinely human is what builds lasting trust.
        •  Play the Long Game with Marketing: Meaningful business relationships take time to develop. Stop judging every piece of content by its return this week, and focus on delivering small deposits of value that compound over time.
        •  AI for Leverage, Not Spam: Use tools like Claude and ChatGPT to build small internal efficiencies, draft logic, or organize data, but avoid using them as hands-off machines for uninspired marketing copy.
        • Conclusion Success in marketing still comes down to the basics: understanding your audience, delivering massive value upfront, and treating people like human beings. Don’t let new tech distract you from the work that actually moves the needle. In this short episode, I cover reaching your customer first and lifestyle marketing.

When it comes to reaching your customer first, before your competition, make that you provide value through blogging, customer service, and social media. This can be knowledge, information or tips. You can provide information about a product or service. Create engagement and trust for when someone is ready to buy, they would want to buy from you.

Use automation to get in front of your audience first. Use information and data to help trigger messages at the right time. Take advantage of your customers’ emotion or even time of day to help convince people to buy from you. You can also trigger a message when someone visits your website. This might mean that they are interested in working with you our wanting to buy a product.

With customer service, greet people right away, use proper etiquette, and provide helpful and valuable information. If you use a chat, look into chatbots to help improve response rate and help save you time. If you interact with customers quickly and make life easier for them, you will set yourself apart from your competition. It is hard to find companies that put customer service first these days.

With lifestyle marking, you want to appeal to people and how they live. It is the things they like and how they want to be treated. Solve a pain.

Develop personas, which is identifying the “type” of person that buys from you.

One persona may be a male 30-40 years old that likes exercising expensive meals. Another may be a 20-25-year-old female that is into yoga and is also into milkshakes.

Make life easy for your customers by catering to there lifestyle. Do not make them go through numerous steps to learn something or buy from you. Appeal to the emotions of your personas and that you understand them. Help them make a decision.

Use lifestyle marketing to appeal to your audience and make sure that you are the first to reach your customer!

Diana M. Needham, The Book Shepherd, joins me today. I met Diana at a LinkedIn Live networking event and really enjoyed speaking with her and learning how she helps people get books published. Diana works with her clients to not only write a book, but market it, and obtain the result that they really want. She is the owner of Needham Business Consulting.

Diana works with business leaders, small business owners, and service professionals that have a big message to share and want to use that message to grow their business. A book can be a very powerful marketing strategy and lead generation tool that helps you stand out from your competition and position yourself as a thought leader in your industry. Most of your competitors may not have written an article, not to mention a book! Consider your book as your $4 business card that can be leveraged not only as a product to sell but a tool for attracting ideal clients, referral partners, and new opportunities.

I mention my book writing process.. There were challenges, but I received help along the way. It really is a team effort!

I asked Diana about how someone could write a book without it being so daunting. Her answer? Start by identifying the biggest challenge your ideal customers have. Your solution (which can be steps to follow or key concepts you teach) become the chapter content.

Your last chapter should not be a conclusion. It should be “next success steps”. What do you want the reader to do now? Is it to call you, set up an appointment, or visit your website for your newsletter or free gift? If you do not move your readers to your email list, you can’t follow up, deepen the relationship, and move them to the next step to do business with you.

There is no better time to be an author. You can use a book to promote your products, services, and website. Especially with digital books, you can add hyperlinks to direct readers where you want.

How is a book more powerful than social media, email, or press releases? A book shows people what you know, not just what you do. Use your book to share your personal story and examples or case studies of how you’ve helped clients.

You need to get your book out there! At times, offering it for free for some time can generate reviews, which may help others buy your book. Diana mentioned someone that is doing a library tour and a book signing tour to raise awareness. You can use events and conferences to network and promote your book. Offering your book as a gift and sending your book through snail mail allows you to obtain physical mailing addresses, which are much more valuable than an email address alone.

Make sure that your book looks professional. It needs to have a professional cover and professional editing. I share about how my first book was self-published and the quality is not that great, but that I worked with professional editors, layout artists, and a graphic designer on my second book.

As you begin the book process, there are key questions to ask (and answer) to build the right foundation for success with your book. Some of those questions are: Who is your ideal client? What is the biggest problem they have? What is the end result you want?.

I admit that I am good at “vomiting on paper”, then going back and clean it up. You just need to get the content out of your head and heart and on paper. Your first draft will be crappy (let’s be honest, everyone’s are!), but you can get help to polish it. Editors are trained to do just that. My editor really helped me a lot! The right editor has your best interests at heart and while some feedback may sting, it is all intended to help you create a better product that will get the results you want.

“The person that changes the most through this process is the author,” DIana shared. When we write a book, we become more clear about our message, approach, and process. We gain confidence in our abilities and skills. Recognition and opportunities follow.

Get started. Find someone like Diana to help you build the right foundation and get the book written, published, and out there. You will be glad you did.

Gold tip: share your powerful personal story. The main things that make you different are your experiences, training, education, view of your topic, and learnings (that many times come the hard way!). Leverage your powerful story as your introduction to stand out and get your readers’ attention.
