To run a podcast you almost always need a website for that podcast. Here is a complete tutorial or how to create a website for your podcast.

How to create a website for your podcast?

I’m going to meticulously, step-by-step, through how to you can create a website for your podcast. This lesson is going to get a little bit technical, but stick with me because this is a really important step and we need a website if we’re going to start our podcast. And I’m going to make it really easy for you, so don’t worry.

The cost of getting your website off the ground, getting it up and running in this episode is going to be $5.60 upfront and $7 per month or it’s going to be $76.80 for 2 years. Which works out to about $3.60 per month, and that’s exactly what I did. Now, I’ve already got our domain name, which cost us $10. And this cost is for our hosting, which is where our website is actually going to be hosted.

So, what is hosting? Well, what happens when you actually visit a website is your computer actually downloads that website from a server, which is a sort of computer. And so, with hosting, you need to have your website on a server so people all over the world can download your website and view it on their computer. Now, you can have a server in your own house. However, you do need to manage that server; manage the Internet, make sure that you’re not hacked and all of that sort of stuff. It’s much cheaper and much easier to just outsource this and to just use a server company. And as we looked at the price, you know, it’s going to be $7 per month or if you paid 2 years upfront, $3.60 per month, which is really, really cheap.

The hosting company that I use and will be using in all of these tutorials and the one that I recommend is called Arvixe. Okay, now on to the tutorial.

Okay, so we go on to our web browser and we type podcastfast.com/hosting. That’s my affiliate link and this will take you to the Arvixe homepage. We can see Superior Web Hosting and there’s As Low As $4 per month and we can click View Plans. I’m actually going to give you a coupon code so it’ll actually be less than $4 per month. But for now, this big green button just click, View Plans.

Okay. We’re now in a section called, Linux Hosting, which is what we want and we can see here, Personal Class and we can see a little penguin and that’s exactly what we want. We can see the 2 different options here, there’s Personal Class and Personal Class Pro. Now, Personal Class just has a limit of 6 websites that you can host on here, whereas Personal Class Pro has unlimited. So I suggest that you just start with Personal Class and if you end up having more than 6 websites, well,

It is recommended you have a website for your podcast. But before the website you need a domain name. Here is how to buy a domain name for your podcast.

How to Buy a Domain Name for Your Podcast?

The domain name is your www.yourdomain.com. So for me, it’s www.podcastfast.com. Obviously yours is going to be different based on what your podcast is about and what you can actually get.

Okay, so now I’m going to show you how to set up a domain name for your podcast. The cost of setting up your podcast domain, just so you know upfront, is going to be $10. And that cost is $10 per year. So every year you’re going to have to pay that. I’m going to talk you through this and talk you through exactly how to do it. Don’t wait too much and stress too much about taking notes because I do have a step-by-step guide that you can download to make life easier for you. Go to podcastfast.com/setup, s-e-t-u-p in order to get that guide to download so you can just simply follow the steps and take off things as you’ve done.

I always, always, always recommend that you buy your domain through GoDaddy and the link is podcastfast.com/godaddy. And the reason I recommend GoDaddy is that they are by far the biggest in the industry and they’ve got great prices. So you’ve got a great price and if ever it comes down to it and you want to sell your podcast then it’s really easy to transfer domains within GoDaddy and it’s very common and very accepted. So it’s going to make your life so much easier to use GoDaddy. It integrates really well so if you ever use anything that needs to integrate with your domain name then GoDaddy is always there because they are the biggest. So go to podcastfast.com/godaddy, I’m going to head there right now.

So we’re going to type in podcastfast.com/godaddy and now that’s going to bring out the godaddy home page which you see on my screen. That’s an affiliate link but that’s not going to cost you anything more to go through that and it does help out the show. So what you need to do then is you then need to click on enter a domain name. You see a search box at the front and you just simply have a go at what you think your brand should be called. So for me it would be podcastfast and you don’t put the .com or anything, you just type what you want and you click search domain. This will then come up and tell you whether the domain is available or not. So we can see Sorry, podcastfast.com is not available.

Now it’s not available because I already own it. And we can see down here that podcastfast.net is available or they give you some suggestions like podcastquick.com or you can scroll down and see podcastrapid.com and you can see all of these different options. So what you can do if something is not available is you just have another go. So for example – what else could we call it, podcastingforyou or something like that, click search. Let’s see if this one’s available. So good news, podcastingforyou.com is available. So we could click the continue to cart button to check out and that’s going to cost us $9.49, so it’s almost $10.

However, you may have trouble finding a domain name and if you do, a quicker way to search from multiple different options is go up the top and there’s a domain tab. So click on that and then scroll down and you’ll find bulk domain search. So you click bulk domain search and then it will take you to this page where you can enter up to 500 different domains. You can also search a lot of different domain name extensions. So we can see here .com, .co, I also like .me, I like .net. .org is alright, it’s not awesome. And you can scroll down and see so many different things and if we go down the bottom .email, .coffee, .farm, .agency, and literally hundreds of these different extensions that you could choose from. But for now, I’m just going to choose the main ones up the top.

Why you need a website to podcast and why you shouldn’t just set up a soundcloud or libsyn account.

We talked about the cost associated with starting a podcast and some of those cost are things like buying a domain name and getting some hostings. I want to talk about why you actually need a website to podcast and why you shouldn’t just setup a SoundCloud account or something like that. You can do podcasting without a website, I want to be upfront with you here. It is completely possible. You can use the SoundCloud RSS feed there’s Libsyn, which is another provider, they have an RSS feed. You can use Spreecast, they have an RSS feed. But, I’m going to go through – and hopefully convince you, that it’s going to be worthwhile having a website for your podcast.

Okay, now in to the 7 reasons why you need a website to podcast. The first reason you need a website to podcast is that it gives you full control of your podcast. You may not think that things are changing right now. But, as you begin to podcast, you learn so much along the way and chances are, you may not have setup everything correctly or you may want to change things about your podcast and your brand. By having your own website, this gives you full control of your podcast. Some of the limitations with going to someone else is that it can be difficult to change the sequence of your podcast. So if you accidentally get your podcast out of sequence, that can be a hard thing to edit.

Another thing is, if your change the branding of your podcast and you’re changing over to a new brand, that can be extremely difficult to change. Which means you will have to lose all of your listeners, all of your subscribers and start again if you want to change your brand. So, having that full control – I need you to trust me on this one, having that full control is so important if you’re going to be a serious podcaster. I wish that you’d get that full control with other services but it’s actually quite difficult and it’s better just to control it yourself, on your own website. And in future lessons, I’m going to show you exactly how to do that.

The second reason is that you then have somewhere to send people to. One of the things with podcasting that makes it, I guess, slightly harder than other mediums is you can’t hyperlink in podcast. You can’t get people to click a link and simply go to where you want them to go. You need to spell things out for people. I need to tell you to go to podcastfast.com. You then need to open your web browser, you need to manually type it in. If you’re on SoundCloud and you’re like, “Go to soundcloud.com/feed/podcastfast”. Are you likely to remember that and enter it in? Probably not. And even if you got there you couldn’t really do much. So, by having your own website, you have somewhere to send people to which can be really important.

The third reason is that you can collect email addresses of your listeners. This is something you definitely can’t do in SoundCloud or the other media host but you can do with your own website. For example, with this course, I’ve got a lot of bonus add-ons that I haven’t included in the course but that you can get for free if you subscribe to my email newsletter. For example, today’s episode, we’ve actually got a website step-by-step setup guide which you can get at podcastfast.com/setup. Now, you go to podcastfast.com/setup, you’ll be prompted to enter in your email address to get that step-by-step setup guide. And then, obviously, I can contact you in the future; let you know updates about the industry.

Let you know about any products that I may launch or service that I may launch. And so, it allows me to keep in touch with my readers. And that’s something you can do as well. You can collect email addresses; get to know your readers. And so if I ever launch something related to this or something that you might find interesting, I can let you know about it.

If you are podcasting with SoundCloud which I totally recommend that everyone does you may occasionally get this error when you try to put in your direct mp3 link into the Blubrry powerpress plugin. The error says could not find valid MPEG sync before end of file. I am going to show you how to fix this error in this episode.

This error comes up when you put in your direct .mp3 file I have another video that shows you how to do that if you don’t know how to do that already I’ll link to that below and if you click verify URL then you get this error message.

Now this error message doesn’t mean that your podcast episode won’t work in iTunes it will still work as long as this is still the correct link but it doesn’t automatically detect the file size and the duration which means in iTunes the chances of those not being there are quite high.

So we want to have that there so in order to fix this error what we do is simply highlight our direct link URL and we go ahead and we copy it. We then go ahead and open a new tab and we simply paste it into a new tab and click Enter. This will now begin downloading that file. We can see down the bottom here sapf6.mp3 is downloading.

Now if we leave that for about 5 seconds or so, or you can download it completely if your internet is fast enough so for me it is fast enough we can see that download is complete we now go back into WordPress and we click Verify URL and this will actually fix the problem. We can see media verified successfully we can see the file size in bytes and we can see the duration and so that has been fixed.

Why does this fix the problem I have no idea. I have no idea why this fixes the problem I found this fix on someone’s website I tried it myself and it completely works. I’ve done it for many different episodes and it works every single time. So if you have this error simply copy this download that file and verified again straight afterwards that should fix the issue. We can then go ahead and click update on our post and the issue is now fixed. So there you have how to fix the could not find valid mpegs sync before end of file error that happens in the blubrry power press plugin in WordPress when you’re podcasting with SoundCloud.

So if you want a new font in ScreenFlowone that isn’t available by defaultI’m going to show you exactly how to add that.If I go into ScreenFlowbasically what I want to dois – you can see here my logo podcastfast.com, basically what I want to do is be able to usethis font. And this font doesn’t actually exist so if I gointo the textbox and I click add new and we can say we’ve got some text up there and I’m just making it bigger so that you can see it.My font is actually called age so if I go here then you can see thatobviously age doesn’t exist. So to add this font what we need to do is go right up the top to the menu options and we need to click on fontand we need to click on show font. We can also hit commandT in order to do this as a shortcut. That will thenbring up this little font tab here.

What we want to do is actually gointo the settings bar on the top left and we want to clickthat down and then we want to click on managefonts. What we want to do is to then add our font. So we just simply click the plusbuttonup the top. We then find our font. So for me it’s age.otf and we click open. This will nowadd the font to our selectionof fonts.So we can see that there’rethese user added fonts and we can see that age is in there now. Now we can simply close that off.  So we are back here and now we can see all fonts and we can seethat age is there.

If I just exit out of this I’m then going to need to restartScreenFlow.So I’m going to need to exit out of it, close it completely and restart it. Okay, so I actually closedout of ScreenFlowand restarted it. I couldn’t show you thatbecause ScreenFlowwas recording it but I did exit out of it. I held onto to here down the bottomand made sure that it was quitso that it was completely deactivatedand then I reopened it up. So now if I click on my textand highlight it or if I click on it down here I can thenchoose my font and I can see that age is now available.And the text is now available and I can edit that text however I want to.

That is how you add a font to ScreenFlow.

Hey this is Ryan from podcastfast.com and in this lesson you will learn how to find our MP3 file location in SoundCloud. I personally use this MP3 file to put into the Blubrry power press plugin in wordpress however you can use it for whatever reason you may need it for.

The MP3 files are actually found in your SoundCloud RSS feed. Now you do need to be a podcasting beta user in order to have an RSS feed. So as long as you’re a podcasting beta user this will work if you’re not a podcasting beta user then simply Google SoundCloud podcasting click the first link that comes up and then click here “apply to be accepted to our podcasting beta program” and fill out this form to be accepted. Assuming you are a SoundCloud beta customer simply go to soundcloud.com and in the top right hand corner click the sign in button.

Fill in your details and sign in. Once you’re signed in again go to the top right hand corner and click this cog that looks like your settings tab and then down the bottom just above log out click settings.

This will take you to your profile settings page and here you will find your RSS feed. So simply copy this and open a new tab and then paste it into the new tab to get your RSS feed. You can now hit command F or control F if you’re on a PC and type .mp3 in the search tool bar. You will then see.mp3 come up a few times where ever you have files. You can now highlight your files so where it says url = “you want to copy this http:// all the way to .mp3 and that is your direct file location if you need it.

If you then want to add it to your blog then go into the post you want to add it to and find this podcast episode section where it says media url simply paste in the link to the mp3 file. You can then click verify url to make sure that it is correct and we can see it says media verified successfully and we can see this is 16 minutes 58 seconds which I know it is. We can then update our post and that will now syndicate out to iTunes and Stitcher as long as you’re already in their directory.

Hi, this is Ryan from podcastfast.com. In this lesson you’re going to learn how to find your RSS Feed in SoundCloud. So if you need your RSS Feed for whatever reason I’m going to show you exactly how to do that.

The first thing you need to do is to go to www.soundcloud.comand in the top rightthere’s a sign in button so simply click thatand then fill in your details to sign in.Once you’ve logged in again go to the top right hand corner and look for thiscogthat is the settings option. Then click that cogand then look for the settings tab which should be down the bottom of the listjust aboutlogout.

Click the settings tab and this will bring you to your profile page.And here you will see your RSS Feed and you can simplycopy that RSS Feed.  If you open a new tabyou can paste that in and you can see that thisis your RSS Feed here. So this linkin your settings tab is your RSS Feed. And if you want to find your directdownload mp3swhen you’re in the RSS Feed just hit command F or control Fif you are on a PC. Then put dot mp3in the search bar. You will then be able to see allof the URLs that have your mp3 files. Depending on how many you havewill depend on how manyare in there but that’s how you will find the direct download linkinside you RSS Feed.

Personally I don’t use the SoundCloudRSS Feed for iTunes or Stitcher or anything like that because it doesn’t give mefull control and I want full control. So what I do is I use the RSS Feed to find mymp3 filesand I then put those mp3 files ontomy WordPress blog using the Blubrry PowerPress Plugin.

Hey guys Ryan here from podcastfast.com and in this episode I want to talk about some of the podcasting predictions that I have for 2015. I spend a lot of time listening to podcasts. This is actually the fourth podcast that I have. So I currently run four different podcast so I know a bit about podcasting so here are my predictions of what I think will happen in podcasting in 2015.

My first prediction for podcasting is a bit of a depressing one and that’s that I don’t think there’s going to be any new tech in podcasting at least not any significant new technology breakthroughs. I would love to see some new tech in podcasting something like YouTube but for podcasting however I don’t think that is going to happen. I don’t know if the passion just isn’t there in the tech community and that everyone who podcast is passionate about the content rather than the technology.

But I just can’t see anyone coming out with some new technology for podcasting in 2015. So that means we’re stuck with the standards we’re stuck with iTunes and stitcher radio how are trying to work their way into cards and we’re also stuck with maybe SoundCloud but there’s hardly anyone podcasting on that.

My second prediction is that there’s going to be more storytelling podcasts. With the success of Serial which has been the most downloaded podcast ever or the fastest to get to a million downloads or something like that with the success of them. There’s also the success of another podcast called Startup and there are other podcast called Reply All.These are podcast that have a high production quality but they’re more storytelling sort of podcast. So rather than your standard one person sitting on a microphone trying to give advice which is what I do let’s face it or you’ve got your two people trying to give advice so there’s two people that host a show and talk about it or you’ve also got your interview type shows.

Rather than just having your standard shows like that I think there will be more entrance into the storytelling market obviously with the success of Serial the success of Start Up when you get crowds that are that big then money also comes with that. So I believe people will be pursuing that because it seems that’s what crowds want to hear so we’re going to see more storytelling podcast in 2015 which I think is an exciting thing.

Third thing I think is we’re going to see more media coverage around podcasting. We’ve seen media coverage for sporadically throughout the years. Every time Apple releases a new app or in this case Apple actually put podcasting into ios8 and you couldn’t deleted it there has been new media hype around podcasting and how to make money in podcasting and the success of podcasting and I think podcasting has reached a level now where it’s significant enough in terms of the audience that more media will start to cover it and more people will begin thinking about podcasting and begin recognizing podcasting.

It’s kind of hit that threshold and it seems to be continually growing. Podcasting is a slow-growing market but it doesn’t seem to be going backwards so I think because we are reaching that 30 million users in the US reaching up to 40 50 60 million as we keep going up we’re going to see more media coverage cause it’s a bigger market there’s more audience on there so people will want to talk about that.

The fourth thing is that I think there will be more and more podcasters moving to SoundCloud. I saw this start in 2014 where a couple moved over to SoundCloud but in 2015 I think more and more podcasters will actually begin shifting away from their existing media host and towards SoundCloud. The reason I think people will begin shifting away is because SoundCloud does give them the opportunity to expand into a new audience.

How much does it cost to start a podcast?

In this episode I’m going to break down exactly what it is going to cost you to get your podcast off the ground and get it started so you can work out whether it is worth the investment or not.

Now in this episode we’re not going to be looking at how much equipment cost. I am saving that for lesson number 10 but just so you know equipment is going to cost you between $0 and $100. For example I am recording this episode on my iPhone using the iPhone headphones that came with the device. So I consider that a zero dollar investment because I already had these things anyway however there are some microphones I recommend and they go up to about $100. So if you’re keen on understanding equipment then what I recommend go to lesson 10 by either finding it in iTunes or stitcher are going to podcastfast.com/10. So we’re not going to be covering equipment in here but we will be looking at all the other costs associated with starting a podcast.

We’re going to be looking at two different types of people that want to start a podcast. There’s your toe in the water people and there’s your in the deep end people. The toe in the water people are the people who are pretty sure they want to get into podcasting they’re finding it very interesting they’d like to give it a try but they don’t want to invest heavily in podcasting yet. So we want to start with as little investment as possible and in the deep end people are people who know that they want podcast they know they’re going to be podcasting for some time it’s going to be a big driver of your business and so they’re willing to invest a little more upfront if it’s going to save them time or save them money.

So let’s have a look at the toe in the water cost associated with podcasting. The first cost you’re going to have is buying your domain name which is your www.yourdomain.com or whatever it may be. Now in lesson number 3 I’m going to talk specifically about why you need a website for podcasting but just trust me at the moment a domain name is going to cost you about $10. You’re also going to need website hosting as well to host your website and for the toe in the water people this is going to cost you $5.60 for your first month.

I’ve got a special coupon for you and again that’s another lesson when we go through exactly how to set up your website so $5.60 for the first month and then $7 per month after that. We’ve also got Podcast artwork that we need to buy and this is going to cost us $5.50 and we’ve got SoundCloud which isn’t going to cost us anything to start with.

SoundCloud is free up until you have two hour’s worth of audio content. Once you go over there 2 hours and then once you go over 6 hours then it ends up going to $15 per month is the most you’ll ever pay for your SoundCloud account. So it’s going to start at $0 per month and could end up at $15 per month if you do a few long episodes. So the total cost for someone who is toe in the water want to get started but don’t want to make any huge investment it’s going to be $21.10. And then it’s going to cost you $7 per month for the hosting and maybe $15 per month for SoundCloud as well so $7 to $22 per month with your toe in the water.

Now let’s have a look at the people who are all in and are willing to invest a little bit more upfront so they can save themselves some money over the course of the year. You are going to have a domain name as well so you’re going to need to put up $10 that doesn’t change. Domain names are about $10 per year and whether your toe in the water or all in it’s going to be the same. Next you’re going to be buying hosting. We’re talking about the 10 reasons you – yes you, should start a podcast. There are many great reasons to start a podcast and you can build a massive audience by podcasting and you can grow your business in significant ways. We are going to break it down and look at some of the reasons that you should start your podcast.

The first reason is that podcasting is an unsaturated market. If you look at blogs and how many millions of blogs there are out there or if you look at YouTube and how many thousands of hours are uploaded to YouTube every single minute, they are very saturated markets. However, with podcasting there are not nearly as many podcasts as there are videos or there are blogs and so it’s an unsaturated market. In fact it can be very hard to find good content in the podcasting arena. Therefore this gives you a massive opportunity if you can come in and offer good content then you can gather people’s attention and you can get readers, get listeners and get customers.

The second reason is that smart phones are now absolutely everywhere. It used to be very difficult to download a podcast. You would have to go into iTunes search for podcast, download it, sync your iPod and then take your iPod with you. However now that everyone has smartphones podcasts are just one click away. In fact Apple, on their new operating – the latest updated – their operating system now has the podcast up in there as a default and you cannot delete it. So everyone with iPhones have podcast and with Android devices as well. It’s very easy for people to get podcast. They can stream it on the go and they can download it on the go. They don’t have to log into a computer and sync anything, they can do it all from their phone. Therefore it is getting easier and easier for people to get access to podcast which means the audience is going to continue to grow.

The third reason is that there are over a billion podcast subscriptions. Apple announces in July of 2013 that they had over a billion podcast subscriptions which means someone has gone into a podcast episode and hit subscribe to that person’s channel so that they can get updates of their podcast. One billion is a big number and that means that there’s a lot of people listening to podcast and there’s a lot of opportunities for people to subscribe to you and to get every single episode that you release delivered directly to them. Thus it is a great way to build a consistent audience.

The fourth reason is that people can listen to you and people can listen to your podcast on the go. With all the media these days, with text, with video, it’s getting shorter and shorter because people have shorter attention spans. However podcasting is bucking that trend because people can listen on the go while they’re doing something else. They can listen to a podcast while they’re driving. They can listen to it while they’re going for a run or while they’re working out. This means that your episodes don’t have to be two minutes long. In fact if your episodes are two minutes long podcast listeners get disappointed because they run or they work or they drive for more than two minutes.

People like long phone content on podcast so it gives you more time with people which leads to benefit number five which is you can build a great personal influence and great trust with your audience because people are listening to you for long periods of time. Maybe half an hour a day, maybe in an hour, maybe 20 minutes here and there but because they’re spending a lot of time with you and because they’re listening to your voice something about the voice that just doesn’t come through when you write a blog post or people read written text. You can build massive personal influence with people which can really help you get business and can really help build that loyalty with your ...
