Steve Johnston teaches engineering and digital electronics at Logan High School.

Welcome to Goldstar educators podcast from the La Crosse public education foundation. Great things are happening every day lacrosse public schools hear first-hand from teachers that are on the front lines about how this nonprofit education foundation is strengthening our community, one student at a time to get a lifeline here will just without their support and at that week you could do some of the things that none of the project would've been available Steve Johnson as an engineering and digital electronics teacher at Logan high school. I think our kids are super blessed to have things like engineering and digital electronics and things like that now available to them in high school. What kind of grants has a lacrosse public education foundation but able to help you with a great deal with a number project done. One of the first one grant I wrote was for a remote operated underwater vehicle basically made out of PVC pipe and bilge pump microcontrollers that had a WebCam and we would go down to the bottom like all put cool or a lake so I don't want the first one to get them. We moved to another project called their unmanned aerial vehicle and we partnered with their inland power to design the vehicle and what happened to your own power to send a helicopter out quarterly to take a look at powerline education going over and so on. We thought well let's try to make a grown would do that you expect of powerline and go through that difficult terrain that we moved to another when we partnered with the train Ingersoll-Rand through design and build a vehicle for you. You've probably heard about the Google car right and use vehicles that are driver left and they have a semi that goes between two plants quite a and they're wondering if there's any way they could automate that we decided to take a look at a vehicle that was capable of thinking that the environment and navigating without human input. We decided had be powered by solar energy, so is really neat design activity for the kids and we ended up designing a vehicle that is about the size of go-cart is what what would be so is this about the scale of force solely on what things you tell me the high school students designed every one of these things you're talking about. Yeah, yeah. We were very fortunate to be in a community where we have unity support in the form of local engineers and businesses and industries that will come in and be partner with and give the kid that that's the question over the top that they need. As far as finding out how to do a lot of these projects have been posted online for the defendant from start. How we document the engineering design process and picture the kids doing different things as well as all our successes and failures like the Kelly kids fail forward and if you're going to fail fail early, though failure is just something that we have to accept and in a job and learn from. So when we make a mistake for something doesn't work we learn from it and then use that to fail forward move forward in the process. We just don't want to fail late in the process used project that we've done no II think it's the key point is districts can't just don't have the budgets to support a lot of these things so I was out. Organizations like the La Crosse public education foundation, I and other community partners. I mean none of these things would've happened. These kids wouldn't have got those experiences and it's a really sad thing because I think that if they don't happen because no movement. Some of these stem related careers. As you can be really nice paying job was things are happening in the cross public schools is a workable cost public education foundation. Rick Blasing, counselor at Lincoln Middle School.

welcome to Goldstar educators podcast from the La Crosse public education foundation. Great things are happening every day lacrosse public schools hear first-hand from teachers that are on the front lines about how this nonprofit education foundation is strengthening our community, one student at a time, every educator may have different replacing as a counselor at Lincoln middle school at a counselor if I had a friend that you know what I made a difference today and I'm actually seeing the results within that same 24 hour period. Whether it's helping with the family. The student kid situation. Sometimes you can see immediate results, and after very rewarding. After some something going on in terms of conflict or, or something of that nature. Rick tell me about how you got drawn into the La Crosse public education foundation. I was made aware that at one point come by the advertising and one of the board members approached me because I had them the privilege of being a student counselor, advisor, and we don't hold different assemblies for different things got beakers and understood real quickly that La Crosse public education foundation is like a aspiring for encouraging educators instead of the jumpstart that situation, it became clear to me that yes there providing funding but I thought at the bike providing the creative fuel for all the extraordinary possibilities of what a teacher could do with that funding and I just start applying for some grants and some different speakers in the different assemblies and things and they been nothing but supportive IT across the board. Their support of an adventure that the distal wide-ranging will to leave a couple of the grants you've received from the La Crosse public education foundation will over the years as a counselor in student counselor, advisor with my mission is to contribute to the environment of the school, the well-being of the students, and more importantly increasingly, much more so in recent years. In recent decades, let's say, helping families and neighborhoods whose children come to our school so there's a direct connection there. So some of the things we've done have been inspirational speakers, people are coming to talk about. Keep your eyes and the prize and plowing ahead in life. Even if your situation at home or elsewhere isn't perfect. At the time that is not who you are is a student that your future is ahead of you and we can create your own life that some speakers have been to discuss the challenge of folks who may be have not been advanced have not had the advantage. Most recently I met them. Judge Kristi Yang. He was born in a refugee camp in Thailand and now he is an elected judge in the city of Milwaukee. Kristi Yang actually agreed to come to our school. La Crosse public education foundation funded that she talked to her students he taught from high school students and she also talked educators this quite amazing that there is an example that that funding, providing that for everyone here. It sounds like the La Crosse public education foundation does a lot of things for a lot of different people. I am amazed when I look at the list of the different grants awarded how wide-ranging they are. I think it empowers teachers. It really does. It encourages and empowers them. What I see those wonderful outside of the box kind of ideas get. It provides that that inspiration and encouragement to go for I am honored and I would say that I'm so grateful for the La Crosse public education foundation for the funding that are supporting for these these wonderful ideas I can say it jumpstart to get those ideas off the drawing boards and insidious limitations. One just things are happening a little cross public schools through the work of the La Crosse public education foundation. It's great to know that there's people out there that are willing to help out teacher such as yourself, like the La Crosse public education foundation. Tell me your thoughts on the La Crosse public education foundation of people act. All during my day during the year. I wish I had wanted to do the time that I could gather other teachers that the conversation about our supported things that I think are important for many other teachers, then such a fabulous court. During my career, certainly, and in fact that the kids enter into school now graduated out of the grants you've written is there one that stands out is closer to your heart than any of the other ones. I think that first translate relic was about Milwaukee, and teach teachers about, what we do. Said they have been exposed to trauma what we can expect and how we can regulate them and help them know that we are going to love and support them and keep them safe at school. That's a huge issue right now is that kids need to feel safe at school. Don't all my gosh yes I respond cool, thanks for you do for the kids and I probably don't hear that very often, but I feel very department that I have written grants La Crosse to make a different class about forgiveness, how to deal with strong emotion and so actually for all of the cockpit floor and go through all of the different writing letter for somebody or somebody can't go back and talk about all learned about forgiveness as one that was a great cult that was also wonderful things are happening across public schools through the work of the cross public education foundation. welcome to Goldstar educators podcast from the La Crosse public education foundation. Great things are happening every day lacrosse public schools hear first-hand from teachers that are on the front lines about how this nonprofit education foundation is strengthening our community, one student at a time frame that we are in a place where people are all about likely caught the drift was like we're untouched reckless in night. Tim sprain is a science teacher at Lincoln middle school and one of the lead teachers of theater program throughout the district of La Crosse, Tim, tell me about how the La Crosse public education foundation helps you out on a daily basis. All my goodness will first of all, they give me that current finance and support emotionally educator the foundation had lifted me up emotionally and financially to a place where I can actually feel I can really do my job effectively again. Leah was 10 years ago and they put the tools in my hands that are up-to-date and ready to be in the student can. It's something that if there is ever an idea that we have. We can go to them and they'll be like yes Brad we go to administration and other limited budgets right now so it's hard to get everything we need to have excellent in our school without the public foundation is essential that look, education foundation is here and what makes La Crosse a wonderful place to live and send your kids to public school. What you tell me about the random act of kindness that they have all my like that that one thing that I have shed tears on a regular basis and the impact that our families in the class. We have a transient population. We have several people that are homeless. We have people that are looking for freedom refugee. We have people that speak multiple languages look cool. The region is a beacon of hope for families and often times they come to the La Crosse public schools to get the education they need for their student and we not only care for them in a way that ensures excellent education, but we also show that they have what they need basic needs food, clothing, random acts of kindness have really put legitimate groups on the feet of kids jacket food in there in the mouse to get through this rough time. Every staff member in our school are always looking out for the kids and we always find that there are needs that cannot be met at home because of situations and we can direct those funds into specific student needs to man a chance to talk a little bit about how the La Crosse public education foundation helps out students, but they also reach outside of the classroom and how about students above and beyond with some extracurricular activities and things to help out with that as well. Don't say absolutely and it got public education foundation will need to impact not just the sports activities, whether it's a new set of uniforms or some equipment or not. Even when we get this brand-new sound system so that people that have hearing impairments can come in and enjoy. Here are shows clearly in the audience members and have a more enjoyable experience watching those shows and watching those sporting events and feel like they're part of that community because La Crosse public education foundation that we can add that I think indicate and fill that idea of what you can't go out many of the listeners. Everybody has to leave the children become adults and other leaders in our community that are doing the same thing they're giving their making buildings are designing Riverside North there designing the old Kmart people that are making a huge difference in our community. La Crosse is a beautiful, wonderful things are happening a little cross public schools through the work of the cross public education foundation. Bob: I’ve lived in La Crosse since 1992, and I’ve had the opportunity to do a lot of different things. One of the persons I’m pleased to know is Mr. Festival. Those of you who don’t know who Mr. Festival is, it’s Pat Stephens. Pat is involved in everything – well, almost everything. Pat, thanks for being on with us this month for the Great River Road Podcast. Tell me about some of the things you’re involved in.

Pat: Well, in the summer months, of course, you have Riverfest, which is right on the Mississippi River in Riverside Park in La Crosse. It’s always a huge success [and] a lot of fun – [it’s] a great family festival as well. That’s followed just a couple weeks later with Country Boom that’s held at Maple Grove Country Club just outside of La Crosse. That’s growing significantly. [There are] probably 20,000 to 25,000 people in attendance out there. It’s a great country [music] fest. We get into August, and then we’ve got Irishfest. It’s a little bit better and more improved each and every year, so that keeps us busy. Oktoberfest comes around at the end of September, then we take a little break as we get into Rotary Lights, [which is] the largest holiday display in the Midwest. It starts the day after Thanksgiving. There’s never a dull moment.

Bob: I was going to say, what do you do in your spare time, Pat? Is there such a thing as spare time when it comes to being Pat Stephens?

Pat: Not really, because beyond the festivals there’s a whole host of other community things that I try to take a leadership role with as well, so there’s never a dull moment.

Bob: How did you get involved with helping out the community?

Pat: I think it all started back in high school. I was very active and involved in all sorts of clubs and organizations, and [I was] class president and all those sorts of things. When I got to the University of [Wisconsin]-La Crosse as a student, I immediately got involved with one of the social fraternities, Delta Sigma Phi. We got extremely involved with things on campus, with student government, with getting a fraternity house and putting on a couple concerts on campus as well. It just kind of carried over after we graduated so we could continue that involvement.

Bob: What do you like best about living on the Wisconsin Great River Road?

Pat: Oh, my goodness. I drove back from the Twin Cities yesterday and took the Great River Road on the Wisconsin side. When we went up for the weekend, we went on the Minnesota side, which is also very beautiful. I had my two older sisters with me in the car, and they had never been on the Great River Road while in the Milwaukee area, so they just tremendously enjoyed it. We stopped in a lot of the small towns. The people are friendly. The architecture that some of those towns have maintained is simply beautiful. The water is always something to watch. They were so fascinated with the barge traffic, which they had never seen, either. You just kind of take it for granted as a daily activity.

Bob: Let’s kind of look at that a little bit, because I think a lot of people that don’t live in this beautiful area where we live don’t tend to know what they’re missing.

Pat: There is nothing like it. I enjoy driving people who come to La Crosse for the first time. It’s amazing how many people on the east side of the state have never discovered Wisconsin’s western coast. They get over here, and generally they’re in awe of the bluffs, the river, [and] the beautiful forests that we have. And of course, we have all sorts of amenities in our areas using the rivers: canoeing, kayaking, the bike trails, the hiking trails. There’s a lot to offer over here. That’s why we call it home.

Bob: How do people get involved in some of the festivals that you’re involved in as Mr. Festival?

Pat: Usually your ambassadors, your current volunteers are your best recruiters. They have the best networking to get friends and family involved. It’s something that they themselves enjoy. In addition to that, of course, all of the festivals have websites. And I think to my knowledge, all of the websites have a place to put comments if you’d like to volunteer and help with a particular cause.
