As we come to the end of a month of Oxfordshire castles, its times for another theme! This time, we are talking about one of Nikita’s favourite periods- the Anarchy! Popping up throughout all of our Oxfordshire castles, the Anarchy has been super important this month, so we thought we’d give you a little summary of the full story for context. As the name suggests, the Anarchy was a tad chaotic- join us as we zip through the key castles of the story!

After looking at the main castles of a county, it can be good to dip in to what history is available for some smaller ones in the area, and Oxfordshire definitely has some worthy candidates! This episode looks at a number of castles in Oxfordshire, including Broughton, Deddington, Shirburn, Hanwell, and Grey’s Court.  Between them, they cover almost one thousand years of ghosts and skeletons- with some names you should recognise if you’re up to date on your Podcastles!

Normally we only include castles that still exist today, but Oxfordshire has so many castles that are now just ruins and mounds that we had to make a few exceptions.

This month, we are moving on to our second county- Oxfordshire! We are kicking off with an episode on Oxford castle, which was particularly important during the Anarchy of 1135-1153, as well during the Civil war in the 1640s. Having served as a prison for a long time, Oxford castle has some great Ghosts and Skeletons- particularly fitting for Halloween!

It’s time for our first themes episode! At the end of every county, we will be taking a theme that came up lots, and discussing in on a national scale. As we come to the end of Warwickshire, we decided to look at Castles and King making, and how the nobility are able to influence, and sometimes even replace, the monarch.
