    Day 1: 6:1-8

In Revelation five, we saw God give Jesus the scroll with seven seals holding it closed. Now we will watch as Jesus pulls apart the scroll one seal at a time.

    First Seal

    John must look
Jesus is the one who gives authority to this conquerer
Much debate over the identity of this conquerer because of his white horse
Seals 1-4 are four aspects of this conquerer
    This is the antichrist
As Jesus opens the first seal we hear the four living creatures shout “Come and see.” They say this as Jesus opens each seal. The implication here might be that John would be otherwise inclined to look away. What is going to take place is going to be confusing at first, but once the scroll has been opened, it will make sense.

In the first seal, Jesus is actually giving authority to a conquerer on a white horse to come forth in the earth. He is given a bow, but without an arrow or quiver. This is almost certainly a reference to the Antichrist, henceforth known as The Beast in Revelation. Many scholars disagree on this, and there are almost as many interpretations to who this rider is as there are books on the subject. The fact that this rider is on a white horse cause many to reject the idea of him being the Antichrist.

One of the the things that offends people about Jesus potentially releasing the Antichrist is when we understand what he will do intentionally to the saints. But one thing is clear and undeniable—it will be God who grants Him authority to conquer the earth and the saints specifically. We are told this plainly in Revelation 13:7.

It was granted to him to make war with the saints and to overcome them. And authority was given him over every tribe, tongue, and nation.

This brings up some very hard questions, but ones we must ask if we are to fully understand Revelation. Why would our loving God knowingly release a conquerer whose main objective is to oppress and kill God’s people? When we study this book, we will see why God is at no point less loving because of this, but we must not distance ourselves from the offense we feel at this. We must face it head-on, and God will answer us for it as we study His plan for the end of time.

This rider on a white horse seems to corroborate the image we are given of the Antichrist by Daniel—that he will be a deceiver who initially brings peace.

    Second Seal

Now the conquerer makes use of his bow with ammunition. War breaks out and death begins.
With this seal, a red horse and rider are sent out. They will bring world-wide war on the earth. These horsemen may be literal or symbolic of different aspects of the Antichrist’s reign as it progresses. The similarities are striking.

    Third Seal

Now this conquerer will have a hand in bringing scarcity
Could be intentional or a consequence of his wars from the second seal
This increases the hatred on earth as Paul references in 2 Thessalonians 2:7-8
The third horse is now black, and he and his rider will bring scarcity on the earth. What he proclaims is that basically, a normal laborer’s day’s wages will by enough food to feed one person very meagerly. Some believe that the reference to not harming the oil and wine means that the wealthy of the earth will be untouched by this judgment, something that will deepen the growing hatred on earth as the Paul describes in 2 Thessalonians 2:7-8.

    Fourth Seal

This next horse represents the color of dead flesh.
The amount of dead from this would amount to 1.75 billion people if it were to occur today
This will happen in a very short period of time, possibly two years or less
A pale horse and rider come next. This “pale” is a reference to the color of human skin when it is dead.

    Week 3: Revelation 4-5

    Day 1: 4:1-8

In Revelation chapters 4 and 5, we transition from the message of the seven churches to the heavenly realm. John is whisked away into the presence of God, and he begins to see things that will forever change history.

This place has been described by Isaiah, Ezekiel and Paul, but no one gives us so detailed a tour as John. God is pulling back the veil of heaven for we believers to be able to peer into eternity. This is the beginning of a truly life-changing encounter with God.

John is only writing the main points of what he sees from now on, and doing the best he can with hu man language and experience. We are seeing everything from here on in Revelation through the lens of a first century Jewish Christian. We must understand that John saw this all clearly, but what he saw likely confused him at times. We see that by the end of this Revelation in chapter 19, he is so undone by all of it he is willing to fall down and worship anything that seems to have any amount of glory on it.

    The Throne Room

Color: The first thing we notice is color. For whatever reason, John described the color of God and His throne first before anything else. We should take this to heart—God is architect, designer, engineer, master builder and expert craftsman. He has given Himself beautiful accommodations and He intends them for us too, and it caught John’s eye first and foremost.
    The Elders
John - not likely, since he was seeing them
Angels - not as likely since they are not referenced in an angelic way
Humans - more likely, but who are they?
Sounds: Next John notices sounds. This is a fully immersive experience like no other. John is really there, not in a dim visionary state
Seven lamps: Seven Spirits of God
This is the second time we see this in Revelation. We don’t know what the seven spirits are, or what is meant, but many believe it is a reference to the seven spirits of God listed in Isaiah 11:2 (inclusive of the “Spirit” Himself)
Sea of Glass: How big? Why is it there? It is what was represented by the sea that was part of the tabernacle Moses was commanded to build. We see here that the tabernacle and the temple were meant to represent and foreshadow the very real place that exists around God’s throne.
    Living Creatures
    Same as Ezekiel saw?
    Why only four?
    What do their faces represent?
    Day 2: 4:9-11

The Activity Of The Throne Room

The four living creatures sing constantly: Are we to understand that they literally never stop, or is it a regular thing that breaks out at set times?
Is this singing why David established 24/7 prayer and worship around the tabernacle? David alluded to having visited this place (in person or in a vision) when he gave Solomon the temple plans in 1 Chronicles 28.
When the elders hear the songs of the creatures, they join in the song and throw down their crowns before God. They realize that they are in the same debt to God as we are. Everything given to them, and to us, is due back to God and God alone. That cannot help but recognize this in His presence.
God is worthy of all power and glory because He created everything, therefore we owe everything to Him.
    Day 3: 5:1-8

    The Plan

God is holding the plans for the culmination of this temporary world, wrapped up within a scroll and sealed with wax seals on the outside.

Why does John see Jesus as a slain lamb with seven horns and seven eyes?

Jesus Himself will open these seals and release the deadliest battle plan in human history upon the earth.
