Reinventing itself as an elementary magnet school for math and science through technology, accessible via random lottery, Bracken exited In Need of Improvement status in two years and has been a “5-star” school since 2010.

Through a partnership with the Connecticut Science Center, the entire faculty at Annie Fisher STEM magnet faculty has been trained in teacher by inquiry. This approach —applied in subjects as varied as mathematics, biology, and history—has made the school a model “turnaround” in Connecticut and a pioneer in shaping regional and national STEM instruction.

To celebrate Teacher Appreciation Week, here is 2014 National Teacher of the Year responding to an question after his speech at the 2013 NBRS Ceremony. A member of audience asked: “I was wondering if you had a teacher who inspired you, especially in the field of science.” Here’s how Jeff Charbonneau answered:

To accelerate learning for disadvantaged students, Graham Elementary uses ELA and math "stopgap" measure to bring students up to speed quickly.

With the decline of local industries, Piedmont High School is an engine of rejuvenation. The school spearheaded a computer and broadband access initiative that provides every student in fourth grade and above with a laptop all day every day.

Founded in 1983 to serve students at risk of dropping out Fenway High School engages students in four year-long sequences of Humanities studies—investigating and debating questions about history, politics, morality, and human nature.
