    Dr. Frank Zaker started the show talking about prostate cancer. Annual blood work should be done to all men over 50 to screen for changes. Stephanie Klemencic, O.D. joined Dr. Zaker to discuss some commonly used systemic drugs and how they affect the eye.    Computer Vision Syndrome was discussed and advice was given during the third segment. To conclude the show, a caller played our “Myths About Your Eyes” game.

  • Healthy and Safe Travel – Eyes on Health – March 19, 2011

    Each “Eyes on Health” with Dr. Frank Zaker starts off with eye related issues and this week’s topic was eye turns.  Dr. Zaker talked about a few different types of eye turns, their prognosis and their treatment.  The bulk of the show was dedicated to travel and more specifically air travel.  Laura Allen, a 30 year airline industry veteran, joined the show and gave some tips and information on things you can do before vacations, emergency kits and how to avoid jet lag.  Captain Robert Stumpf then joined Dr. Frank and Valerie. He answered several interesting questions regarding air travel, his responsibilities as a pilot, and some specifics questions about planes.  We ended the show with a caller playing our game on travel myths.

  • The Show About Nothing – Eyes On Health – March 12, 2011

    This past Saturday’s “Eyes On Health” covered a large variety of topics. This show about “nothing” started off with some tips to reduce glare while driving and the benefits of anti-reflective coating on lenses.   Not all sunglasses are created equal and Dr. Frank Zaker discussed how some sunglasses may cause more damage to your eyes than not wearing sunglasses at all.   Other topics touched upon include; benefits of video games, the Lady Gaga inspired contact lens trend, progressive bifocals and how hair color correlates with different health and social aspects of life. Dr. Zaker was then joined by peculiar caller for their “I’m Sorry I Forgot Your Name” game.

  • Childhood Obesity – Eyes on Health – March 6, 2011

    Dr. Frank Zaker and Val started the show by discussing a major change in children’s coverage for family medical insurance plans.   After talking about some of the advantages of aspirin, Cassie Vanderwall, a consultant dietitian and a certified personal trainer joined Dr. Frank.  They focused on the national epidemic that is childhood obesity. Great advice and information was given on how to use proper portion sizes and how to modify behaviors to help with this problem.  The behaviors Cassie mentioned were not only geared towards active play with kids, but importantly she focused on what the parents can do to properly care for the nutritional demand for children during different age groups.  Dr. Zaker then took a few callers and played a true/false game for a free Vera Wang designer sunglasses give away.

    This show is a great listen for any parent or grandparent who may want better resources or more information on nutrition.

  • Shape Up at Home and Sweet Dreams Game – Eyes on Health – February 26, 2011

    This week, Val started the show off on a serious note talking about Dr. Frank Zaker.  They then went into the 100,000 poisonings that occur a year and most are those are with children within their home.  A few tips on storage and disposal of toxins and behaviors to avoid were discussed. The most important take home message was have the poison control information readily available for anyone in the home; the number to post in your home is 1-800-222-1222. Dr. Zaker and Val did something you may never have heard on the radio; they showed their listeners a slide show of a vacation. The family vacation to Mexico is a must listen.   In the second and third segment Tom Kens, a wellness coach and fitness trainer, joined the show to talk about ways to improve your lifestyle through healthy living.  Some myths were debunked by Tom and activity advice given throughout the great visit on “Eyes on Health”. Finally, a listener joined to play a fun “Sweet Dreams are Made of These Game” for a Navy Pier experience prize.  Listen to the show and play the true/false game yourself.

    Dr. Zaker and Val told a few office stories to start the show. Later Dr. Zaker talked about cataracts, what they are, who is affected, and the process of cataract surgery. Dr. Ron Carr from Midwest Eye Professionals joined the show and discussed multifocal and traditional implants. Later, Dr. Zaker and Val quizzed a caller with a fun game of “Dumb Myths You Actually Believe About Your Health”.

  • She Loves Me, She Loves Me Not – Eyes on Health – February 12, 2011

    In honor of Valentine’s Day, we dedicated this show to LOVE.  We discussed marriage counseling with Dr. Ken Gleaves from Gleaves Consulting in Evergreen Park, IL.  Later, we had a great “Newlywed and Not So Newlywed Game” with 2 couples. Heidi Sonntag, a veteran Hickory Hills Police Officer, called in to discuss different ways of looking at children safety, programs available to the general public, fingerprint and DNA registration.
