  • Aline Blankertz – Unpacking Digital Sovereignty: How to avoid fueling the nationalist rise #bbuzz
    More: https://2025.berlinbuzzwords.de/sessions/Unpacking-Digital-Sovereignty-How-to-avoid-fueling-the-nationalist-rise
    Speaker: Aline Blankertz
This talk shows that digital sovereignty is prone to open the door to a nationalist agenda which favours the power concentration that led to Big Tech, and it easily slips into alt-right narratives that put colonising space over the needs of most our planet's population
With the new ruling coalition of Trump, Musk and Big Tech, European digital sovereignty seems to be the widely accepted solution to break free from US companies that are used to threaten European governments. The EU is reviving industrial policy and is willing to invest a lot of money into digital sovereignty - but which problems exactly should it address, and what should be part of the solution? This talk shows that digital sovereignty is prone to open the door to a nationalist agenda which favours the power concentration that led to Big Tech, and it easily slips into alt-right narratives that put colonising space over the needs of most our planet's population. After an overview of current approaches to digital sovereignty and the role of open-source within those, I will discuss what is needed to reclaim digital sovereignty to defend and strengthen democratic practice both in and through technologies.

  • "The Lost Trees of Willow Avenue" Book Release
Local author Mike Tidwell will share insights from his new book "The Lost Trees of Willow Avenue" in a conversation with U.S. Rep. Jamie Raskin. The book is a riveting and elegant account of the impacts of climate change both on dying trees and Tidwell’s neighbors on Willow Avenue in Takoma Park.
Tidwell also highlights Raskin’s efforts to battle cancer and climate change at the same time. Raskin says the book “will change the way you think about climate change and remind you that, just as all the problems are fundamentally in your backyard, so are all the solutions.”
Set against the national backdrop of recent record heat domes and raging wildfires and hurricanes, Tidwell chronicles his neighbors coping with Lyme disease, a midwife who builds a geothermal energy system, a church coping with flooding, and young people anguishing over whether to have kids. He will sign copies of his book after the event, which is co-sponsored by the City of Takoma Park's Takoma Park Arts cultural series and People’s Book bookstore.
Tidwell is a longtime author, climate activist, and contributing writer for The Washington Post. He founded the Chesapeake Climate Action Network in 2002 where he has led local and national clean energy campaigns.
This event is free and no tickets or reservations are required. Seating is first come first served. There is limited parking at the Takoma Park police station, Piney Branch Elementary School, and neighboring streets.
The Takoma Park Arts series is organized by the City of Takoma Park’s Arts and Humanities Division, including free concerts, theater, dance, film screenings, art exhibitions, and other events at the Takoma Park Community Center. • Arrival: A Special Public Lecture by Rawi Hage and Madeleine Thien
    May 8, 2015
If the world is in a constant state of motion, expansion and collapse, then all arrivals are a moving rest, a hesitation in motion. Arrival is never passive. It is not neutral and it is never innocent for those who arrive or those who are preceded.
Arrival could be imagined as the continuous evolution of the self, a form of renewal or reinvention. We seek it out, anticipating an ending. But what of those who never intended to arrive? As Italo Calvino writes, “But how have I managed to arrive, when I have not yet left?”
In this special public lecture, Rawi Hage and Madeleine Thien explore the nature of arrival through essay, film, and fiction, and the malleable borders between these forms.
    -------
Rawi Hage is an internationally celebrated fiction writer whose work has been translated into 30 languages, and nominated repeatedly for all major Canadian fiction prizes. Mr. Hage’s first novel, entitled De Niro’s Game (House of Anansi Press, 2006), and set largely in wartime Lebanon, won the International IMPAC Dublin Award. His second novel, entitled Cockroach (House of Anansi Press, 2008), won the Paragraphe/Hugh MacLennan Prize for Fiction, and was a Canada Reads finalist. His most recent novel is Carnival (House of Anansi Press, 2013), which won the Paragraphe/Hugh MacLennan Prize for Fiction, and is a riveting account of a taxi driver who reveals the frequently disavowed underside of our global cities.
Madeleine Thien is the author of three books of fiction, including her most recent novel, Dogs at the Perimeter, which was a finalist of the 2014 International Literature Prize awarded in Berlin. She is a recipient of the City of Vancouver Book Award, the Ethel Wilson Fiction Prize, the Amazon.ca First Novel Award, and the Ovid Festival Prize, and her writing has appeared in The Guardian, Granta, PEN America, Asia Literary Review, Brick and elsewhere. Her books have been translated into 22 languages. Since 2010, she has been part of the international faculty in the MFA program at City University of Hong Kong.
