Footnotes:
**Three days of manic road-history searching, and this is what I have to show for it.
There is literally NOTHING to back up Daniel’s line about the Romans learning how to build roads from their gods. There isn’t even a Roman god of roads; the closest you get there is Mercury - the Roman equivalent of Hermes, the GREEK god of roads (kind of, not really. It had more to do with traveling to and from the underworld, but still).
While the Romans were the most prolific road builders in history, the oldest roads predate theirs by millennia (the world’s oldest paved road is in Egypt). There’s next to no information available detailing Roman road origins, just a ton of information about their building styles. Blame what I’m guessing is a combination of both the destruction of the Library of Alexandria and Rome’s sacking when it fell. Thousands upon thousands of scrolls burned, taking centuries of knowledge with them.
I couldn’t even find out if they might’ve stolen road-building techniques from the Etruscans (not that it would’ve helped me much, seeing how the earliest evidence of Etruscan civilization only dates back to 900 BCE). I tried, though, and am officially chalking it up to the writer’s creative license.
