Edition DWI is a new series of recordings from the netlabel Drone Works International. The releases focus on specific themes related to nature and its secrets, its constant change, destruction and renewal. Each album is an acoustic statement that invites the listener to listen attentively and with quiet introspection.

The first release on Edition DWI is by Polaroid Notes. The album ‘Two / Trees / Remaining’ deals with the transformation and changes of our forests, whether through human intervention or natural forces. It has been scientifically proven that forests suffer particularly from global warming. A sad example of the destructive power of extreme weather events happened in October 2018 in South Tyrol/Trentino, Italy, with a storm called Vaia, which devastated and deforested entire mountain slopes within a short period of time, changing the landscape drastically.

‘Two / Trees / Remaining’ is an elegy to this dramatic event, which left deep scars on the mountain landscape and in the hearts of its inhabitants. But it also testifies to the vitality of nature and the people who live there, creating something new out of destruction and pain. The ten tracks of this album reflect this contradiction in minimalist, subtly accented piano compositions with contrasting sublime ambient soundscapes.

The artist himself witnessed the changes in this wonderful mountain region over many years through repeated visits before and after the storm disaster.

Euan from Glacis and I have been friends for some time and appreciated each other’s music for much longer. We got in touch through Whitelabrecs at the time ‘Cloud Anthems’ was released. Since then, we have stayed in touch and chat from time to time about music, our projects, everyday life and family.

In autumn 2022, we decided to start a collaboration and to exchange ideas and sounds fragments via file sharing, a process that developed quite naturally over the next two years. It has been a truly exciting experience, as we both use the piano as one of the main instruments in our own projects, but the album 'Time Is Coming To An End' goes beyond that, combining modern classical compositions with experimental textures, shifting from light-filled passages to shadowy tones, from deep melancholy to sublime beauty.

The work on the album ‘Time Is Coming To An End’ lasted from winter 2022 to early 2025, interrupted by periods when things needed to be consolidated and continued when it felt right. Everything developed naturally, without a specific concept in mind, except for the fun of working together and surprising each other with new ideas and versions of tracks. The result is a moving, multi-layered collection of pieces that is more than the sum of its parts.

A first taste of our Scottish-Bavarian partnership was given by the 5-track EP “Reflections” which we have self-released in spring 2025 for Piano Day. ‘Time Is Coming To And End’ now reveals the full picture in all its depths and details, connected by the moving title and impressive photos from Meike Pfitzner.

"Inner Harmonies" can be seen as a declaration of love to the coastal regions of Liguria in northern Italy, to these landscapes and the sea, to the attitude to life and to the numerous quiet places that can still be discovered even in this region often characterised by tourism. The album tries to capture the essence of this landscape and its moods, and plays with the contrasts between the sea and the neighbouring mountains, which are fascinating in every view of the scenery.

"Inner Harmonies" consists of five long instrumental tracks that lead the listener into a colourful sonic frenzy of ascending and descending sound sections and repetitive structures in which individual instruments temporarily come to the fore and then dissolve again. Like minimal music meets ambient and contemporary classical music, interpreted in a subtle and sunny, light-flooded style.

Last year in September I released the album ‘Quiet Rooms’ on the British label Whitelabrecs. The tracks on this album were a kind of self-healing process to refocus on home life after a long absence caused by working far away. At that time I was making a lot of improvised music and recording many ideas and sketches. After selecting the tracks for ‘Quiet Rooms’, some ideas, feelings, blurred images and unfinished tracks remained, which later became a solid base for ‘All Our Yesterdays’. Over the course of 2024, more recordings were made and - voilà - a new album was born.

'All Our Yesterdays' is probably a bit more introspective, exploring the spaces between the notes in a much deeper and broader way. So each track is quite transparent in atmosphere and sound, with piano notes, electronic textures and strange sounds drifting in and out. As always, all was recorded mainly at night in dim lighting to focus on what's important to me and my music. ‘All Our Yesterdays’ could be seen as a metaphor for missed moments on the one hand and great moments with the people you love on the other. Deep contemplation with a sense of serenity and balanced stillness - some things don't change...

The cover picture was taken in autumn at a nearby lake, when everything was already prepared and waiting for winter.

This EP celebrates the hour that is added every year during the changeover from summer to winter time. The electric piano sounds were recorded late at night during this ‘ghost’ hour, with a few overdubs added in the days that followed.

The five tracks oscillate between gentle and warm memories of sunny days and the dimmed and moody light of the coming winter.
