Ermin and Elvis admire many black conservatives. Thomas Sowell and Larry Elder top the list. But interestingly enough, though probably not all that surprising, we don’t hear much about these men.

On today’s episode, we will have a conversation about the powerful black conservatives out there and also discuss the recent documentary that was released called ‘Uncle Tom’.

Progressivism is a political philosophy that is in support of social reform. The key is that it is just a political philosophy (in short, and in its most simplistic form..this means that Progressivism only prescribes what ought to be/the norms for government (or any practices/institutions concerned with government) and how these things should work and be organized.

This means that Progressivism is and can be grounded in any social or economic philosophy…including socialism or liberalism.

Elvis and I have a conversation of past Progressivism and contemporary Progressivism, among other things.

Is Healthcare a right? Well, this depends in part on whether you see a right as INACTION on the part of others…ie others NOT preventing you from your free speech rights, or if you see a right as only possible if others also ACT..ie others provide you with either a good or service because it is seen as part of the common good.

But beyond this, there are practical considerations when discussing the role of government in healthcare.

Federalist No. 10 is an essay written by James Madison. It specifically addresses the question of how to reconcile citizens with interests contrary to the rights of others.

Federalism in the United States is the constitutional division of power between U.S. state governments and the federal government of the United States.

Tyranny of the Masses or Majority has been a concern for a long time. Constitutional author James Madison in Federalist 10 wrote about the destabilizing effect of “the superior force of an interested and overbearing majority” on a government .

He wrote about the dangers of the majority class with no property getting control of the US Federal Government and then transferring wealth from the minority who are the property owners. (IE. the wealthy class).

In 1991,the breakup of Yugoslavia was under way. Slovenia had declared independence in 1990 and left with only a few shots fired. Croatia declared their independence in the middle of 1991 and would not be as lucky, and this was in large part because a 1/3 of its territory had a significant Serb population.

Bosnia would have the toughest exit as it had significant populations of Bosniaks (Bosnian Muslims), Serbs and Croats. 

In 1991, the three main ethnic groups (Bosniaks, Serbs, Croats) started carving out different regions of Bosnia for themselves. Elvis & I were kids at this time (7 and 11 years old), and were living in a territory that Serbs had declared as theirs. 

This is where our conversation starts.

We highlight what our family went through from the moment Serb soldiers entered our village, to how we ended up in the West.

You will also get some sense about how we feel about socialism/communism, and how that system contributed to the breakup of Yugoslavia.

Political dialogue these days is often very focused on specific policies, and in turn, the assumption is that the government must have the best solution. We look outside of politics...human nature. Individuals fight over Healthcare or Education policy but very few people zoom out to get a sense of the implicit assumptions being made to get to a particular solution. Skipping this important step has lead us to a place where disagreement with opponents on policy is always interpreted as a sign of malice and moral failure, not differences in vision. Progressive commentators like Kyle Kulinski use this tactic often, and they don't see how this is not useful.

Promoting better mental health is a passion of ours. In the past, Elvis dealt with low self-esteem and confidence and this was in large part from comparing himself to others on social networks. Ermin was at one time a Graduate student in Educational Psychology and has seen with his own eyes how psychological diagnosis is nowhere near the standard of medicine. How is social media having an impact on our mental health? Are there any good solutions? What kind of person may be more affected? What role should the govt. have in any of this?
