Paul was writing out of concern for Christians at Philippi that they would not be led astray by false teachers who were enemies of the cross of Christ.  The message is timeless and also for us today.

Hollywood often gets the real story wrong on purpose…to make it more dramatic.  We need to tell our life story remembering God’s providence, his amazing grace, and deliverance brought about by the perfect Son of God.

We won’t understand the Old Testament, the Old Covenant, until we know Jesus as our Savior.  Christians should desire to be more like Jesus, and made ready for their home in heaven.  Good changes come from knowing Scripture, listening to Jesus, and the work of the Spirit in the life of the believer.

Hatred is spiritual poison unacceptable to Christ.  Hatred gets in the way of the mission of the Gospel.  In this sermon, our Lord lists the ways in which we are to show love to our enemies.

Being a disciple is not going to be easy.  You cannot have the same values as the world.  You cannot find your satisfaction in what this world offers.  Jesus blesses those who need him and are loyal to him even during persecution.

Jesus’ miracle of the amazing catch of fish revealed that he is Lord of the creation. When the disciple Peter understood the greatness of Christ, he confessed his sin and experienced the grace of forgiveness. True disciples relate to Peter’s experience. Seeing the greatness and grace of enables a person to give Christ faithful service above every other commitment. Like Peter we must obey the Lord even when we don’t feel like it.

Our Lord presented a clear message to his home synagogue regarding his person and work. The people of Nazareth rejected Jesus as the promised Messiah. Their response meant that the Gospel would bring blessing elsewhere.
