Just before going to the cross, Jesus prays to the Father asking him to protect his disciples and all who would later believe their message. God’s people will persevere because the Father will preserve them. We need a high view of Scripture as the Word of God is the means by which true disciples will be set apart.

What should a church look like? Jesus tells us his expectations. These are some of his last words to his disciples before he goes to the cross. He commands us to love one another. He repeats his command twice more to teach us that this is of the utmost importance.

We must remain in him by receiving the Word with humility and relying upon his strength. Only then will our lives bear the spiritual fruit that God seeks.

Jesus is in every way the Good Shepherd of his people. He died on the cross as a sacrifice for the sins of his people. The first disciples of Jesus had their emotions radically adjusted on Easter Sunday when Jesus opened the scriptures to them. Our emotions also must be for the praise of God. We are called to love God with all our heart and not be indifferent to what he has done.

The disciples were eyewitnesses of the risen Christ on Easter Sunday. Thomas missed out as he was not with the disciples at that time and doubted that the Lord had risen bodily. The next Sunday he was challenged by Jesus to touch his scars and believe. We need to be in fellowship with the church on Sunday to experience the spiritual presence of Christ and be strengthened in our faith as we receive the Gospel message of the Lord’s apostles.

The sacrificial death of Jesus on Good Friday and his resurrection on Easter Sunday are the most important teachings of the Gospel message. These truths were revealed by God beforehand in the Old Testament scriptures and need to be clearly understood. There were many eyewitnesses to the resurrection, including the Apostle Paul.

The disciple, Mary, has a great legacy because she offered an extravagant sacrifice that was fitting for the Lord at that time in his earthly ministry. We must respond to Christ’s love with faith, and not hold back in an effort to protect ourselves from criticism or persecution.
