The fourth and final part of the "Soul" series - how do we care for our whole self (both physical and spiritual)? Jesus makes a spectacle at the climax of a crowded Jewish festival in Jerusalem. John 7 records for us the event where Jesus stands up high and calls out to all who can hear him- to come to him for "Living Water." What does he mean? What do they hear in such a phrase? What is surely understood by those present may escape us with our lack of knowledge of the daily life of the Jews in Jesus' time on earth. Somehow even the character of "Ricky Bobby"- race car winner from the comedy movie, "Talladega Nights" -shows up in the message, providing insight into how we choose to relate to Jesus. And after a quick musical segue, the recording immediately picks up the communion liturgy following the message.

This is a special "5th Sunday" testimonial service in which you will hear from seven persons of different generations, experiences, settings - but all seeing their experience as on mission with Jesus Christ. Some love neighbors nearby. Some travel beyond our national borders to neighbors who are completely different. All are expressing how these times away from their normal environment made a significant faith impact on their lives. At the close, those present had the opportunity to respond to the call of Jesus into some kind of mission - attentive to the Holy Spirit's nudge or leading. Perhaps you will experience this from listening and being open to whatever the Holy Spirit may speak to your heart.

Pastor Dave shares the biblical understanding of mutual support and accountability we all need to travel this life well - and finish strong. Consider the passages shared and the vivid imagery of lives connected and enhanced because of others. This is foundational to the reason for emphasizing the spiritual necessity to be part of some small group that comes to know you and share in your life- and you in others' lives. We cannot grow as intended on our own. Solo journeys in faith do not find support in the life and ministry and teaching of Jesus Christ. Then why do we seem to place such high value on going our own way? Travel this life road together in order to travel well in Christ.

The first book of the Bible, called Genesis, begins with a poetic description of the big picture of everything - the big question of our existence: where do we come from and what is the point? What does it mean when Genesis says God made human beings in his image, male and female...? How is it that we humans have this special image-bearing quality, different from all other creatures? Are we special or burdened? Why does the word "obedience" make us recoil and resist? What then does it mean to be a faithful follower of Jesus - how are we faithful to any relationship? Lots of questions!

I have always admired King David of ancient Israel for so many of his attributes and exploits. But I also have been intrigued by his passion for the Lord. When his world seemed to collapse all around him after such a promising youth and early adulthood, David despaired. But unlike countless others in such a condition, he did not give up and stubbornly held on to the promises of God over his life. If David - with all his exceptional gifts and achievements - would look to God for security, strength, and deliverance, why don't we?

A new series for July focuses on how we understand our "soul." The series title expresses a Christ-follower's personal statement of status or condition. The first installment looks at the sheltering aspect of Christ in relation to our soul - our full or whole self. Just as we take for granted the need for safety and protection of our physical bodies, so we learn to take care to provide safety by guarding our soul's in close relation with Christ Jesus. Psalm 145 is the main text - King David's poetic praise of God's attributes which graciously provide for all in kindness. Then from Matthew 16 we hear from Jesus in teaching his disciples to value their soul far beyond the pursuits of success in this earthly realm. "What good is it to gain the whole world, yet lose your soul?"

Contrary to our inclination toward self-sufficiency, Jesus calls for admission of our lack of sufficiency in relation to Him. He seeks our best life, and it begins with honest recognition of our spiritual impoverishment. This is how Jesus can teach as profound words of hope and healing, that "the poor in spirit are blessed- those who realize their need for him, for the kingdom of heaven is theirs...those who mourn are blessed and will be comforted..." (Matthew 5:3-4). A new disciple of Jesus identifies easily with the twelve step recovery movement and its foundational start of acceptance of powerlessness to manage one's own life. Thanks be to God! In Christ we have a living hope and new life by his grace!
