  • Monsters Inc

James and Nate talk about the oddly not scary Monsters Inc, world-building, wickedness and Wazowski. And they do the voice. But why can't we let monsters be monsters? And what do we say to our kids when they are scared?

The Gospel According to Pixar is available from Amazon UK here.

  • Peter Pan

James and Nate talk about this bizarre tale by JM Barrie, which starts with the standard Disney trope of flying over old London Town - along with growing up, girls crocodiles and shadows. The Gospel According to Pixar is available from Amazon UK here.

  • Toy Story 3

Nate and James are back and where else to start but the next - and, some say, final - Toy Story 3? (We don't talk about Toy Story 4. Well, we try not to.)

How to do you follow a movie which, as James always says, is the perfect movie? James was traumatised by Toy Story 3 - can Nate persuade James to show this movie to his kids. Conversation about parenting, plot and predestination, to infinity and beyond. And back. Yet again.

  • Soul

Nate and James talk about Pixar genius Pete Docter's passion project, Soul. Nate and James both had high hopes. Does it live up to the hope? And the hype? Nope. This movie doesn't do what it says on the tin, and what's in the tin looks amazing but isn't great.

Listen to James and Nate talking with Barry Cooper about the Monomyth on the Cooper and Cary Have Words podcast episode A Swing and a Myth.

  • Christmas Movies & A Muppet Christmas Carol

What makes a Christmas movie Christmassy? Nate Morgan Locke, Reformed Mythologist, has some ideas before going on to talk to a jingling James about Muppet Christmas Carol and The Man Who Invented Christmas (plus a short rant about Trolls).

  • Hercules

Nate and James talk about the ultimate hero and a powerful nemesis who manages to find his foe's Achilles Heel. Even though he's Hercules. Not Achilles. Turns out this movie is a perfect one to watch with teens.

  • Wall-E

What happens when the earth is full of junk? Go out to space while robots tidy it all up. Wall-E could have been preachy, but it's really subtle, has a biblical theme that James totally missed and is an all-round charming masterpiece. Nate and James talk about it - and there's a previously deleted scene that's worth sticking around for.

  • Moana

What happens when your people really need you? Go off and have an adventure of self-fulfilment and learn who you are. It's fun when you turn out to be as awesome as you suspected. That seems to be the message of Moana. Seriously. Nate and James kick around this very popular Disney movie that did a lot of business, and the kids like - and surely that's worth talking about?

  • The Iron Giant

Nate and Jam talk about an autumnal favourite in the Morgan Locke household. It's not October until you've watched Brad Bird's classic, The Iron Giant. Plus they reflect on coming back to movies time and again. And the Iron Giant is sort of Jesus. But sort of not. How do we feel about a mixed metal Messiah? The Reformed Mythologist explains.
