Aftersun is a quiet, aching memory-piece about 11 year old Sophie and her 31 year old father Calum, played with extraordinary tenderness by Frankie Corio and Paul Mescal, as they share a sunlit holiday that years later becomes something far more fragile in recollection. Writer and director Charlotte Wells understands that we often know our parents only in fragments: jokes, glances, awkward dances, silences and tiny moments we don’t realise are precious until they’re gone. For Popcorn Propaganda, it lands especially hard: ours is a father-and-son story rather than father-and-daughter, but the heartbeat is the same - two generations sitting together, watching, talking, laughing and disagreeing, while quietly making memories of one another. Aftersun reminds us that sometimes the most important thing happening around a movie isn’t the movie at all. It’s the person sitting beside you.
