In the third episode of the special arc, we discuss housing issues, racism that surrounds it, and the impact that it has on health outcomes. Our special arc panel is joined by Ms. Demetria McCain of Inclusive Communities Project, as well as Mr. Jonathon Serafini, a housing attorney. Our discussion dives into concepts such as redlining, as well as disparities that exist at the ground level.

In our first live-stream episode, we discuss structural racism in health insurance, and explore concepts surrounding it. We are once again joined by our expert panel, Dr. Christina Robinson, Dr. Erica Spears and Misty Wilder.

As part of a major medical school in Texas, we felt compelled to  have a dialogue about racism and social injustice in healthcare and  research. Our three-episode arc starts off with an examination of the  history of racism in healthcare, including the Tuskegee study. Along  with our regular hosts, we are joined with a panel of experts who bring  varied experiences to the discussion. Drs. Esplin, Jones, Robinson,  Spears and Misty Wilder join us on this important and necessary  dialogue. Our goal, as it always has been, is to open our hearts to our  community, and try to help in some small way. Conversation is a critical  part of this process, and learning from our past can help us to have a  better future for all our fellow human beings.

We are joined today with a very special guest, who serves as the President and Chief Executive Officer of the Tarrant Area Food Bank, Ms. Julie Butner. In addition to her role as CEO, Ms. Butner is a Registered, Licensed Dietitian and has held leadership roles in multiple multinational corporations in the healthcare industry focused on food and nutrition, such as Aramark and Compass Group. Listen in to find out more about food insecurity, identify poor nutrition in patients, and what caregivers can do.

In honor of Black Maternal Health Week, we discuss the issues that affect Black mothers, and what may cause the 3-4x increased death due to pregnancy among the population. This striking disparity exists even when health insurance status, education, and chronic diseases are taken into account suggesting there is something dangerous about being black pregnant and giving birth in the context of the United States. The month of April is recognized in the United States as National Minority Health Month – a month-long initiative to advance health equity across the country on behalf of all racial and ethnic minorities. Our guests for this episode are Misty Wilder, Director of Healthy Start, Brianna Henderson, Founder of Let’s Talk PPCM and Jen Sarduy, President of ReBirth Equity Alliance, Their experiences are crucial in understanding our topic for today.
