This episode explores the intersection of environmental racism and natural disasters, hurricanes in particular. Hurricane Katrina revealed and exacerbated existing environmental racism, which primarily affected low income, black communities in the United States. The Spike Lee Documentary “When the Levees Broke,” Jesmyn Warde’s novel “Salvage the Bones” and Benh Zeitlin’s movie “Beasts of the Southern Wild” are all centered around black families and their experiences during hurricanes. These three sources will guide our discussion on real- life issues.
