My guest today is the very inspirational Heather Choate. She was diagnosed with breast cancer in June 2014 while pregnant with her sixth child, spurring her to write about her incredible journey in her memoir, Fighting for Our Lives. Writing is her escape from diaper changes and runny noses, but motherhood is the greatest journey and joy of her life. Today most of her time is spent homeschooling her six children while trying to squeeze in spurts of writing when she can. She enjoys daydreaming of worlds and people that don’t actually exist but reflect the beauty and complicity of humanity. Her novels, Swab and Frayed Crossing are #1 bestsellers and her latest series, the Jonas Flash Chronicles, is warming hearts and minds across the globe.

While this doesn't seem like my usual positive topic, I assure you it is.  The more open and honest conversations we have about depression, suicide and other mental illnesses the brighter and more positive our society as a whole will become.  For too long people have felt ashamed to admit they were having dark thoughts and needed help.  It is my hope this show and this upcoming book will start some conversations to let people it's OK to need help and it's OK to openly grieve the loss of a loved one who committed suicide.
