Thunder Force

Melissa McCarthy- She's a household name by now and can be picky abutter projects. Octavia Spencer and Jason Bateman also with Bobby Cannavale as the villain. It's a good cast FOR the silliness that follows, though many of the jokes don't land well and obvious things are missed. Octavia Spencer is always fantastic as well as Jason Bateman and Bobby Cannavale. The problem with this movie IS Melissa McCarthy, unfortunately because she can be funny and has been on the past. BUT- If you are looking for a comedy that will make you laugh a few times, you've found one. (3.5/10)

Voyagers

Lord of the Flies. Alien. 2001: A Space Odyssey. Sunshine. All of these and more have pretty big influence in Voyagers. The Earth is used up and can't sustain human life much longer. One plan to save the human race is to repopulate other earth like planets. One such ship has created and grown baby children who will be raised and work / maintain the ship on its 86 year journey, with Collin Farrell along for the ride. When two of the kids decide to sop drinking the blue liquid that keeps them docile and suppress urges, others follow and society devolves pretty fast. Tye Sheridan, Lily-Rose Depp and Fionn Whitehead all star with a bigger cast of noticeable faces you've seen before including Isaac Hempstead Wright (Bran Stark). Voyagers is a slow burn with an unsatisfying climax. (5/10)

Godzilla vs. Kong

What would you expect to get when buying a ticket for "Godzilla vs. Kong"? And you get just that. With some weird human interactions that really stand out as not needed.
Godzilla is again on the hunt, drawn to other Apex predators to destroy. Though this time, he tangles with Kong- 8th Wonder of the World! Nothing about this film is a surprise- except for the tunnel to theater side of the world (Hong Kong), which is par the course for a movie set in the Godzilla Universe. There are a few heart warming moments with a very young Island girl and kong- Kyle Chandler and Millie Bobby Brown are very wasted, which is a shame because they are great. (4.5/5)

Concrete Cowboy

Idris Elba leads the charge in this Netflix Original with some heart and real desire to win awards.
A young teen is sent to live with his father in Philadelphia when his mother is unable to handle him anymore. He finds himself (and his father) as part of a community of cowboys in a large city. If you watch the trailer before the film, you'd certainly think you were going into a certain kind of experience and you'd be part right. There is emotion in Concrete Cowboy- more than most yet fails in the 3rd act to really deliver on the emotional set up, let alone what using Idris brings to the table- the power and intensity unfortunately NOT tapped into in this one. (6.5/10)

Bliss

Own Wilson and Selma...and Bill Nye.
Greg Little is having a bad day. Recently separated, doesn't see his kids enough and not doing well at his job. Greg finds a certain Bliss when he meets a woman with "powers" supplied by a mysterious crystal when ingested and consumed. Bliss does a pretty wonderful job (while being ambiguous enough) to make the watcher not really sure which world is which and which one Greg Wittle ends up in. With evidence both ways, it may even require multiple viewings as there is always something going on in the background you may have missed. (4/10)

Nobody

Bob Odenkirk- should have done this a decade ago. Nobody is one of the best movies of 2021.
Hutch Mansell (Odenkirk) has a born life- His wife won't touch him, his son thinks he's a wimp, his work is the most monotonous routine and he misses the trash every week. When his home is targeted for a break in and money and a kitty cat bracelet is stolen, Hutch sets out to find it. On his way home he intervenes to help a young girl get home safe, nearly killing a drug lord's brother.
Akin to John Wick, and plot kicked off by a domestic animal, Nobody has absolutely wonderful choreography and action sequences- almost like a dance. Connie Nielson, Christopher Lloyd and RZA are wonderful also as supporting cast. (8.5/10)

The Courier

Benedict Cumberbatch is a spy film should be all you need to get you into a seat in a theater. In case you need more coaxing though- The Courier focuses on Grville Wynne, a British businessman recruited by MI6 to transport information back to London, using his cover of constant travel to Eastern Europe on business. Espionage and information is how battles are fought in the 1960's in the Cold War. The Courier is a well written, very competent spy film with a memorable score and edited actin sequences. It's not for everyone but rewards you attention and devotion for the run time. (7/10)

Yes Day (Netflix)

Parents of the world! Would you ever give your kids a Yes Day? I should hope not. Unbelievable, script guided chaos follows. Let's start with the best part of this film- Jennifer Garner- Her devotion to her family and her children, though she says no a lot. Now, let's talk about the bad- the last 80 minutes of the 86 minutes run time. This is a movie about a Yes Day- A day during which parents can not say no to any reasonable request from their children though obvious restrictions do apply- couldn't have been written by anyone with kids. Nothing after this day starts is real or makes real sense, or would be real requests. The absolute oaf of a Sheriff deputy simply doesn't exist- he's too dumb and unaware of real rules, among a dozen other red flags. The reply, "It's a kids movie" simply isn't a good enough argument. This movie only exists as a Netflix Original. (2.5/10)

Chaos Walking

Doug Liman, we expect better from you. We aren't mad, just disappointed.
Chaos Walking is adapted from a novel by author Patrick Ness and has all the ingredients for a real gem- great, young cast, solid director well versed in action and narrative line, and bigger budget. Still, a subpar film with promise early on and undelivered fulfillment on those promises. Though- one thing does have to be said for Chaos Walking- It's releases in theaters when few others are, a fact that is very relevant in the middle of a pandemic. Megastar Tom Holland and should be megastar but isn't Daisey Ridley take the leads in the dystopian Sci-Fi adventure where people can hear each other's thoughts in different forms of sound called "Noise" and there are no women. Should be interesting, but it isn't. (3/10)

Cherry (Apple)

The latest Apple Original film is Cherry- A film about the journey of a young man from early adulthood (college) to the Army as a medic post 9/11, to back home where he has a wife and house waiting for him, to the pits of his own despair in the form of drug addiction ruining the life of those around him to robbing banks and then to an eventual incarceration and a pretty great mustache in the last few moments of the story. It's a ride for sure. Hopefully, you took it. It's worth it.
Tom Holland is Cherry- a young man who goes through the above journey. It's broken out into several different parts and an epilogue that is very pleasing to watch and an impressive montage to boot. It's not an easy watch not is it fun, but very satisfying. (6/10)

Coming 2 America (Amazon)

Eddie Murphy is a weird conversation these days when he used to be the MAIN conversation in Hollywood, or one of them at least. In the same tradition as other recent decade(s) later sequels, Coming 2 America does some things right and many things wrong. But, the spirit of the original is kept in tact...without any of the thoughtful and cleverness that made the original so wonderful and well received. Akeem is great, as always though! Roger (2/10) - Grayson (5/10)

Raya and the Last Dragon (Disney+)

The latest Disney flick is here and her name is Raya and the Last Dragon. As 96% of the time, Disney does not disappoint. A new princess and a new region represented now also in the Disney family. It's an emotional ride, pleasantly well paced with a fun and engaging story. Though, sorry to say it doesn't master any of those, but does them well. Tiny humans and big humans alike will enjoy this even for repeated viewings. (7/10)

Tom and Jerry

Tom and Jerry- An iconic cartoon duo for decades. They are NOT the main focus in a movie named Tom and Jerry. Confused? You should be. This movie really is terrible. Lucky, it will find an audience with kids as it's colorful and full of silly comedy harkening back to old Tom and Jerry comedy slapstick everyone knows and can certainly identify. There's not much in the way of content for adults, which is disappointing as a certain age group would have grown up with Tom and Jerry. (1.5/10)

Sound of Metal

This is a Hidden gem you should watch, and watch immediately. Riz Ahmed is off the charts with his performance more about body language and nuance rather than speaking and delivery. Ruben (Ahmed) is a heavy metal drummer who starts to lose his hearing and must learn to adapt to a life lived as a deaf person. BUT It's more than that- in fact, at it's emotional core, it's about a restless soul forced to slow down almost to a halt and live his life in a completely different lane. But therein lies the beauty- the simplicity of the story- one without gun fight, car chases, or digital effects. The sound design is also a character. The brilliant sound demands you watch this in an environment you can control the volume in relevance to TV. Hearing how the sound bounces back and forth and changes on the drop of a dime is really an enhancement of the already stellar film. Don't miss this one. (9.5/10)

Land

Robin Wright tries her hand at a story with a woman who's lost everything and seeks a new life away from all that is society. The cinematography is quite good, given the subject matter of a picturesque mountain region and blue skies offset by the harsh cold of what white snow. The score is slightly memorable at the best of times with a script that needed another draft or two. If you enjoy this kind of movie- "Artsy" then you will really have a good experience with Land. (5.5/10)

I Care a Lot

Marla Grayson is a bitc.....
Rosamund Pike is extraordinary as the wonderfully corrupt and swindling almost con artist lead. Can stealing an elderly person's life and valuables really this easy? I Care a Lot would have you believe it is- as long as you have a few doctors and care facility directors on your payroll.
I Care a Lot is pretty rare and unique in the fact that it offers no real great candidate to root for and get behind. This is one of those rare instances when you WANT the Russian drug dealer to kill the woman on the poster. With Wonderful and powerful performances across the board and a creepy yet purposeful score- you don't want to miss this Netflix Exclusive. Peter Dinklage has a powerful beard. So, there's that. (6.5/10)

Nomadland (Hulu)

Frances McDormand! You are AMAZING!
Nomadland is a wonderfully crafted poem of modern day nomads and how they live their lives- usually by way of what they've lost. When Empire, Nevada loses it's industry the town shuts down 6 months later- losing 75% of it's residents. Fern lost her job, husband, and her known way of life- making the decision to become a modern day nomad, giving us real accounts of others who live a similar lifestyle across the American landscape.
Wonderful cinematography, camera work and extremely powerful score behind this one making it a great movie- and free to watch on Hulu. Frances McDormand gives what may be the best performance of her already amazing career.

Judas and the Black Messiah (HBOMax)

Daniel Kaluuya and LaKeith Stanfield are simply on a different level. They're on the level of Frances McDormand- This is a good week.
Late 1960's. Northern Illinois. Political turmoil is a powder keg primed for an explosion. Black Panthers and the Police force on opposing sides with Bill O'Neal stuck in the middle, his own views blurring.
When Chairman Fred Hampton talks- you listen entranced.
This is a retelling of the story with incredible violence and morality lines very blurred. And Martin Sheen as J. Edgar Hoover. (7.5/10)

Locked Down (HBOMax)

We have what should have been story of a marriage falling during the Covid lock down forcing two people who now hate each other to deal with one another- even the casting supports this theory. How wrong we all were!
Chiwetel Ejiofor and Anne Hathaway are good. Doug Liman's most recent relies HEVILY on these two, which is okay half the time. When the narrative turns into a buddy comedy diamond heist- that is when the real questions begin to pile up. Look for Ben Kingsley and Ben Stiller and some Vermont hate. (2.5/10)

Mank (Netflix)

Gary Oldman is in his 60's playing a guy in his 30's. But THAT is Hollywood for you. Mank is a look into 1930's Hollywood as Herman Mankiewicz very famously writes and gets inspiration for Citizen Kane, the very well known film born of controversy. The supporting cast is excellent- Amanda Seyfried, Lily Collins, Arliss Howard, Charles Dance and Tom Burke. Written and directed by Jack Fincher and David Fincher respectively, Mank certainly has the Fincher Spin. Those who really have a passion for early days in cinema history and Citizen Kane will love this. Those who are indifferent- probably not as much. (7.5/10)
