I had the pleasure of speaking to Dr. Tan Hui Ling. Doctor turned healthcare leader. At the tender age of 13, her mother's battle with cancer ignited her passion for medicine. By 17, she faced the heart-wrenching decision of signing a Do Not Resuscitate order for her mother. Despite these early challenges, Dr. Tan pursued her dream, studied medicine, and advanced her career in Singapore, quickly becoming an internal medicine specialist. However, when her father was diagnosed with cancer, she returned to Malaysia to honour her family's legacy, taking over and transforming the family’s private hospital business. From revamping Bagan Specialist Centre to building and managing Oriental Melaka Straits Medical Centre, Oriental Nilam College of Nursing and Star Life Pharma, Dr. Tan's journey from clinical practice to hospital management showcases the significant impact doctors can have in leadership roles, driving improvements in healthcare delivery and patient care.
