Cooper Howard says Fed independence is “crucial” for markets and sees the DOJ probe into Powell ramping up the pressure on that. He thinks the move could potentially backfire on President Trump’s agenda. He also sees it “putting a floor” on long-term rates. Another potential thing to watch is whether Powell stays on at the Fed after the end of his Chairmanship.
