What if the way you are now isn't how life has to be? How many of us have become our identity - be it caregiver, parent, or something else. Not all our beliefs are necessarily self-limiting, but it's important to check in periodically to make sure they continue to serve us.
In this interview, Kim and I explore what an intentional community could be and how to create one. The greatest gift any of us can give another human being is to truly see them, not their disability or any other "traditional" identifying characteristic (race, religion, gender, etc). Perhaps the biggest obstacle to creating community is the "us vs them" mentality that seems so pervasive. We challenge you to do your part to put this to rest.
I feel it's easy for us, as parents to fall into the trap of believing life just can't get any better. Our children's diagnoses and support needs can be significant. Who else is going to care for them as we do? How can we possibly rely on someone else? It's true there will almost certainly be no one who will care for our children in the same way - we're their parents.
Let's flip the script. Do we need someone else to do "everything" we do? Or will our children still have rich and fulfilling lives when we're gone? The reality is most of us will die before our children. The best thing I feel we can do for them is to get things in place now, while we are still here and able to take action.
