The Prepped and Polished Podcast is an educational and inspirational show that offers tutoring and test prep tips as well as interviews with celebrities and leaders in education. It is hosted by Alexis Avila, founder of Prepped and Polished LLC, a tutoring and test prep firm for K-college.
On today's show, Alexis talks to Dr. Joannie Connell, a psychologist and author of “Flying Without a Helicopter: How To Prepare Young People for Work and Life.” Joanie gives us tips on how kids can become more self-sufficient and resilient, and gives parents strategies on how to better let go of their kids as they get ready for young adulthood.
For another related podcast, check out episode #140 with Dr. Delvina Miremadi on how kids can realize their resilience
Helicopter Parenting or Lawn Mower Parenting: When parents hover over their children and plow the path for their children so they don’t have any obstacles in the way.
Tips for Parents: Push kids a little more to help develop their independence and decision making, and help them understand the possible outcomes if they make certain decisions.
Tips for bullying: Go seek help. But remember, when kids constantly go to adults for help, they will feel DISEMPOWERED. So empower them and let the bullied kid take some ownership of the situation. Also, you should work on your self-esteem, so you can let certain things roll of your back easier. Remember the bully is weak!
Joanie’s tips for teens getting ready for young adulthood: Wean your parents a little. “Hey Mom, I’d like to try this on my own and come to you if I need help.”
