What can we influence about eye health beyond prescriptions, glasses, and procedures?
In this conversation, I speak with optometrist and author Dr. Marc Grossman about his integrative approach to vision care—one that considers nutrition, visual habits, stress, the brain-body connection, and complementary practices alongside conventional eye care.
Dr. Grossman draws from optometry, vision therapy, Traditional Chinese Medicine, and decades of clinical experience. Some of the approaches we discuss have stronger scientific support than others, so I think of this episode as an exploration of a broader question: What might support eye health—and where does the evidence become less certain?
In this episode:
-
How the eyes and brain work together in vision
-
The role nutrition and everyday habits can play in supporting eye health
-
How screen use, visual strain, stress, and light exposure may affect how our eyes feel and function
-
What vision therapy and eye exercises can—and cannot—be expected to do
-
Dr. Grossman's perspective on acupuncture, yoga, and Traditional Chinese Medicine
-
Why integrative care should complement, rather than replace, appropriate medical eye care
Your vision is connected to the rest of your biology, but not every eye condition can be changed through lifestyle or complementary therapies. I found this conversation most useful as an invitation to look more closely at the factors we can influence while staying clear about the limits of what we know.
