David the prophet sings a psalm about his LORD and his Lord. One is his God. The other is … his Messiah? This psalm sets the stage for many important truths of Jesus the Christ. Jesus even taught from it Himself. And the writer to the Hebrews will unpack from it even more. Let’s see what the Spirit gave David to teach us.

So the writer of Hebrews is about to obsess over someone whose name is hard to pronounce and is otherwise a little obscure unless you are a Scripture nerd or are trying to prove a point. So to help us understand his point, we are going backwards to get the context of this important person to the writer’s teaching. And along the way, we should gain an appreciation for the unity of Scripture.

Impossible is a word like never, I avoid using them. But the writer of Hebrews says that arrogant apostasy can be just like that. Impossible to renew those people back to repentance because what else can God do that He hadn’t already shown to them? With men these things are impossible but with God, all things are possible. Keep praying.

The pastor of the Hebrews worries for some of his congregation that they are not growing in their faith and unprepared for coming persecution. He will challenge and exhort them to build on the foundation that has been laid. They need to take personal steps in the spiritual disciplines as disciples to mature in their faith. If they do not aim for something, then they will miss the mark.

We may not know much about a High Priest’s job but we still needed a greater High Priest. Thus God appointed His Son to become human so He could better intercede and help His people.

The gospel writers narrate the events of the passion week without explaining the significance and reason for cross. But I suspect that is because they expect their people to read beyond the gospels. And that includes reading this important passage from the prophet Isaiah, written centuries before Jesus lived.

We learned that we need an advocate to go between our offensive sinful condition and a holy, righteous God. Jesus, the Son of God fulfills that need Himself so that we can find mercy and help in our time of need.
