Pray for Iran

Thank you for joining us this month as we take up “The Invitation” and join together with thousands of YWAMers from around the world as we pray and hear from God. This month we will be praying for Iran.

The people of Iran, numbering approximately 92.8 million, are facing a national crisis. Protests about runaway inflation and lack of freedom have been met by a brutal crackdown that has reportedly resulted in the deaths of an estimated 5,000 people and the detention of many more.

Although the state claims that more than 90 percent of Iranians are Shia Muslims, independent surveys suggest a very different reality: only about 40 percent identify as Muslim, 32 percent report having no religion, and roughly 8 percent identify as atheists. Apostasy laws criminalize conversion from Islam—punishable by death—yet despite this, underground Christian communities are estimated to number between one and two million believers.

At this crucial time, please join us in prayer for Iran. Please pray right now and also pray on February 12, the prayer day for YWAM’s prayer initiative called The Invitation.

  1. Pray for protection and courage. Ask God to protect the protesters who are risking their lives for truth, and to comfort families torn apart by fear and loss. Pray for hope and motivation in the midst of economic hardship
    1. Pray for the underground church. Iran has one of the fastest-growing Christian populations in the world, with underground churches expanding despite persecution. Said one YWAM worker, “Through the years we have been involved we have seen a steady stream of people come to Jesus. The growth of the church and the hunger from people for Jesus inside the country is amazing.” Pray for the safety, strength, and bold witness of these believers as they shine like lights.
      1. Pray for Iran’s young people. Pray for the 25 percent of Iran’s population under the age of 15, who are facing an uncertain future. Iran’s younger generations increasingly reject mandatory hijab (head covering) laws and state-enforced religious identity. This cultural shift has positioned Iran as one of the fastest-secularizing societies in the Middle East, directly challenging the ideological foundations of the regime
        1. Pray for the spiritual transformation of leaders. Intercede for the redemption of Iran’s leaders. Pray that even Ayatollah Ali Khamenei would have an encounter with Jesus Christ and experience true freedom.
          1. Pray for justice and peace. Ask God to respond to the cries for freedom with His freedom, and to the hunger for justice with His justice. Pray for unity, human rights, and freedom of religion and thought. Pray that Iran’s story would be rewritten not merely by human power, but by the power of God’s love.
