J.L. Gerhardt writes, creates Bible studies, and leads workshops about prayer with the single goal of leading people into a closer, more on-purpose relationship with God. She's spent the last 10 years intentionally exploring and experimenting with prayer.
She works alongside her husband, Justin, with Round Rock Church of Christ (just outside of Austin, TX) and homeschools their daughters, London (7) and Eve (6). She likes to explore outside, take pictures, read books, and eat gluten-free pizza.

Centered in spiritual truth with a refreshing variety in practical approaches!
What I love most about Prayer: In Practice is the rich variety of strategies or ways into prayer Gerhardt offers. I recommend reading the whole book, trying out as many of the prayer practices as you can, then choosing a few to purposefully incorporate into your own life, keeping an open mind and remaining willing to change your approach as needed. I found using the Lord's Prayer as an outline for my personal prayer to be powerful and helpful for a season. Then I tried setting up a cute prayer board, but I didn't get any further than a few squares of cork board and a couple index cards. I love the idea, and it works great for many people; it just isn't working well in the day-to-day flow of my life right now. But right now I am finding GREAT richness in using different sections of Scripture as frames for personal prayer - which I typically write out in a journal. Buy a Prayer: In Practice for yourself, and buy a copy for a friend so you can exchange ideas and share the journey into prayer! This book will bring great blessings!

We used this book for our ladies Bible study, and it was a great tool for improving prayer life and growing closer to God. The prompts and application techniques were helpful and just the right amount of challenging. I enjoyed it so much that I have started giving it away to friends who have had surgery, to shut ins, or anyone that might need some encouragement. It's a great tool for reaching out to others because, really, who doesn't want to improve their prayer life?
