Praying A Hymn: Have Thine Own Way

Listen Later

Do you sing hymns in church? Many grew up this way and still do.

But have you thought about reading these hymns as a prayer? We sing them on a Sunday morning in service, not always giving thought to the meaning behind the words. So many are Scripture based and sung to the Lord.

One of my favorites is Have Thine Own Way. If you’re familiar with it, or even if you’ve never sung this hymn before, let’s read the lyrics as a prayer.

1 Have thine own way, Lord! Have thine own way!

Thou art the potter, I am the clay.
Mold me and make me after thy will,
while I am waiting, yielded and still.
2 Have thine own way, Lord! Have thine own way!
Search me and try me, Savior today!
Wash me just now, Lord, wash me just now,
as in thy presence humbly I bow.
3 Have thine own way, Lord! Have thine own way!
Wounded and weary, help me I pray!
Power, all power, surely is thine!
Touch me and heal me, Savior divine!
4 Have thine own way, Lord! Have thine own way!
Hold o'er my being absolute sway.
Fill with thy Spirit till all shall see
Christ only, always, living in me!
Have Thine Own Way, Lyrics by Adelaide A. Pollard (1906)

A Prayer Insight … from E. M. Bounds

Those who know God the best are the richest and most powerful in prayer. Little acquaintance with God, and strangeness and coldness to Him, make prayer a rare and feeble thing.”
