Morning Prayer - March 2, 2022 | Ash Wednesday
The time has now come in the Church year for the solemn observance of the great central act of history, the redemption of the human race by our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. In the Roman Rite, the beginning of the forty days of penance is marked with the austere symbol of ashes which is used in today's liturgy. The use of ashes is a survival from an ancient rite according to which converted sinners submitted themselves to canonical penance. The Alleluia and the Gloria are suppressed until Easter.
Pope Francis has everyone to participate in a Day of Fasting for Peace on this Ash Wednesday. (Catholic Culture)

Morning Prayer - February 26, 2022 | Saturday memorial of the Blessed Virgin Mary
Saturdays stand out among those days dedicated to the Virgin Mary. It is a remembrance of the maternal example and discipleship of the Blessed Virgin Mary who, strengthened by faith and hope, on that “great Saturday” on which Our Lord lay in the tomb, was the only one of the disciples to hold vigil in expectation of the Lord’s resurrection. It is a prelude and introduction to the celebration of Sunday, the weekly memorial of the Resurrection of Christ. It is a sign that the Virgin Mary is continuously present and operative in the life of the Church. (universalis.com)

Morning Prayer - February 23, 2022 | Memorial of St. Polycarp, Bishop and Martyr
"The Lord is the king of martyrs: come, let us adore him!"
St. Polycarp of Smyrna was converted to Christianity by St. John the Evangelist. He was a disciple of the apostles and friend of St. Ignatius of Antioch. He was ordained bishop of Smyrna (now Izmir, Turkey) and was about eighty-six when the Roman pro-consul urged him to renounce Christ and save his life. St. Polycarp said, "For eighty-six years I have served Him and he has never wronged me. How can I renounce the King who has saved me?" He suffered martyrdom in 155 by burning at the stake in the amphitheater of Smyrna.
Let us pray for all our persecuted brothers and sisters in the faith that through the intercession of St. Polycarp, they may remain steadfast in the face of trials.
