  • Morning Prayer -WEDNESDAY, 05 July 2023

LISTEN | Morning Prayer - July 5, 2023 | Memorial of Saint Antony Mary Zaccaria, Priest

"Let us adore the Lord, for it is he who made us." - Invitatory antiphon

St. Anthony Mary Zaccaria (1502-1539) was born in Cremona in Lombardy and started by studying medicine, but soon decided to become a priest instead and was ordained in 1528. He founded the Congregation of Clerks Regular of St. Paul, generally known as the Barnabites (after the church that was their headquarters), whose aim was the reform of the clergy and laity. He was part of the general movement to self-reform in a Church that was coming increasingly under attack from the Protestant Reformation.

St. Anthony was a great admirer of St. Paul and was himself imbued with the teaching of the great Apostle, whom he gave to his followers as a model and a patron. He was a zealous and untiring preacher and completely wore himself out at this work; he died at the age of thirty-six on July 5, 1539.

St. Anthony Mary Zaccaria, pray for us!

  • Morning Prayer - TUESDAY, 04 July 2023

LISTEN | Morning Prayer - July 4, 2023 | Memorial of St. Elizabeth of Portugal

"The Lord is a great king: come, let us adore him." - Invitatory antiphon

St. Elizabeth was the daughter of King Peter III of Aragón and was named after her great-aunt, St Elizabeth of Hungary. She was married to King Denis of Portugal, by whom she had two children. She set up hospitals, orphanages, and other institutions, patiently endured her husband’s infidelities and provided for the education of his bastards, and acted as peacemaker in the quarrelsome and complicated politics of the time.

On her husband’s death in 1325 she retired from public affairs and devoted herself to prayer and the service of the poor. Throughout her life she was faithful and regular in prayer, and daily recited the Liturgy of the Hours.

In 1336 her son, by now King Alfonso IV of Portugal, went to war against King Alfonso XI of Castile. Elizabeth followed the Portuguese army on the field in an effort to bring about peace. She succeeded, but the effort killed her.

She was canonized on May 25, 1625, by Pope Urban VIII.

St. Elizabeth of Portugal, pray for us!

LISTEN | Morning Prayer - July 3, 2023 | Feast of St. Thomas, Apostle

"The Lord is the King of apostles: come, let us adore him." - Invitatory antiphon

The Feast of St. Thomas, the Apostle who at first did not believe, has become for the Church one of the first witnesses to her faith. She is fond of appealing to his testimony and frequently puts in our mouths those simple words whereby he expressed the fervor of his regained faith: "My Lord and my God." It is known that St. Thomas preached the Gospel in Asia beyond the frontiers of the Roman Empire, probably in Persia and possibly as far afield as India. St. Thomas' feast was formerly celebrated on December 21.

  • Morning Prayer - WEDNESDAY, 2 August 2023

LISTEN | Morning Prayer - August 2, 2023 | Wednesday in the Seventeenth Week in Ordinary Time

“The Kingdom of heaven is like a treasure buried in a field, which a person finds and hides again, and out of joy goes and sells all that he has and buys that field.” Matthew 13:44

What is your ultimate desire in life?

We are on a constant journey in life towards wholeness. This search takes us each to different walks of life where we hope to find fulfillment. When we find fulfillment of life, our joys knows no bounds. That becomes, for each, his treasure. But greater than any earthly treasure is the fulfillment that comes with reaching heaven. Therefore, we should desire that Jesus remains with us always. We should go to sleep with Him on our minds, wake praying to Him and allow Him to accompany us throughout every day.

LISTEN | Morning Prayer - July 2, 2023 | Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time

"Whoever finds his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it." - Mt. 10:39

We sometimes fall into the trap of seeking the pleasures and comforts of this world, which could not satisfy our deepest need for God. It is only when we truly let go of our desires for the sake of God's most holy will that we will attain the joy and fullness of life that He has promised to those who seek Him. Let us ask the Holy Spirit to open our hearts to know His will and the courage to heed it with trust and confidence in God's love and providence for us.

  • Morning Prayer - SATURDAY, 01 July 2023

LISTEN | Morning Prayer - July 1, 2023 | Saturday Memorial of the Blessed Virgin Mary

"Let us listen for the voice of the Lord and enter into his peace." - invitatory antiphon

Saturdays stand out among those days dedicated to the Virgin Mary. These are designated as memorials of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

"Whatever its historical origins may be, today the memorial rightly emphasizes certain values to which contemporary spirituality is more sensitive. It is a remembrance of the maternal example and discipleship of the Blessed Virgin Mary who, strengthened by faith and hope, on that “great Saturday” on which Our Lord lay in the tomb, was the only one of the disciples to hold vigil in expectation of the Lord’s resurrection. It is a prelude and introduction to the celebration of Sunday, the weekly memorial of the Resurrection of Christ. It is a sign that the Virgin Mary is continuously present and operative in the life of the Church." (Directory on Popular Piety and the Liturgy (2001), §188)

LISTEN | Morning Prayer - June 30, 2023 | Memorial of the First Martyrs of the Holy Roman Church

"Come, let us worship Christ, the King of martyrs." - invitatory antiphon

The Optional Memorial of the First Martyrs of the Holy Roman Church is in honor of the nameless followers of Christ brutally killed by the mad Emperor Nero as scapegoats for the fire in Rome. The pagan historian Tacitus and St. Clement of Rome tell of a night of horror (August 15, 64 A.D.) when in the imperial parks Christians were put into animal skins and hunted, were brutally attacked, and were made into living torches to light the road for Nero's chariot. From 64 to 314 "Christian" was synonymous with "execution victim."

LISTEN | Morning Prayer - June 29, 2023 | Solemnity of Saints Peter and Paul, Apostles

"Come, let us worship Christ, the King of martyrs." - invitatory antiphon

Today the Church universally celebrates the Solemnity of Saints Peter and Paul, Apostles (d. 64-67). Veneration of the two great Apostles, Saints Peter and Paul, has its roots in the very foundations of the Church. They are the solid rock on which the Church is built, the origin of her faith and will forever remain her protectors and her guides. To them Rome owes her true greatness, for it was under God's providential guidance that they were led to make the capital of the Empire, sanctified by their martyrdom, the center of the Christian world whence should radiate the preaching of the Gospel.

LISTEN | Morning Prayer - June 28, 2023 | Memorial of St. Ireneaus, Bishop, Martyr and Doctor of the Church

"Come, let us worship Christ, the King of martyrs." - invitatory antiphon

The Church celebrates the Memorial of St. Irenaeus of Lyons, Bishop and Martyr (130-202). He was born in Asia Minor around the year 140. It is not known when he came to Gaul. He was a priest of the Church of Lyons during the persecution of 177 when St. Pothinus, first bishop of the city and the first martyr of Lyons, was put to death. Irenaeus succeeded him as bishop and twenty-five years later was martyred in his turn during a fresh persecution. At a time when Gnostic sects threatened to undermine Christianity by a perversion of Christian thought, St. Irenaeus vigorously denounced all heresies and safeguarded unity of belief by laying down the principles of the doctrinal tradition of the Church.

In 2022, Pope Francis declared St. Irenaeus to be Doctor of the Universal Church, with the title “Doctor Unitatis” (“Doctor of Unity”).

LISTEN | Morning Prayer - June 27, 2023 | Memorial of St. Cyril of Alexandria, Bishop and Doctor of the Church

"I will sing to you, O Lord, and I will walk in the way of perfection." - invitatory antiphon

Today is the Optional Memorial of St. Cyril, Patriarch of Alexandria (376-444). Cyril was one of the metropolitan sees of the Christian Church in the east, was one of the great defenders of the faith against the heresy of Nestorius who denied the oneness of person in Jesus Christ. At the Council of Ephesus in 431, over which he presided in the pope's name, and at his instigation, it was defined that Christ, the Son of God, is at the same time God and man, and the Blessed Virgin Mary, His mother, is truly Theotokos, the Mother of God. St. Cyril died in 444. The Church venerates him as one of her great doctors. His commentary on the Gospel of St. John is one of the richest doctrinally of those left us by the Fathers of the Church.
