"Pay to Caesar what belongs to Caesar and to God what belongs to God." - Mark 12:17

LISTEN | Morning Prayer - June 5, 2023 | Memorial of St. Boniface, Bishop and Martyr
For the first forty years of his life Boniface was known as Wynfrith. He was born in Devon and educated at the monastery at Exeter, and then joined the Benedictine abbey at Nursling, near Southampton. He was a teacher and preacher, but he desired to preach the gospel in a foreign land. In 718, Pope Gregory II commissioned him to do so, at the same time changing his name from Wynfrith to Boniface.
Boniface left England, never to return, and took the gospel to the heathen tribes of Germany, where he had great success. He himself was created Bishop of Mainz, and he founded or restored dioceses in Bavaria, Thuringia, and Franconia. In his later years he worked with King Pepin the Short to reform the Frankish church, and then, over seventy years old, set out to evangelize Friesland (part of modern Holland) where he was set upon and murdered, on 5 June 754.
He is buried at Fulda, near Frankfurt, in the monastery he founded himself, and is honored as the apostle of Germany.

LISTEN | Morning Prayer - June 4, 2023 | Solemnity of the Most Holy Trinity
The fundamental dogma, on which everything in Christianity is based, is that of the Blessed Trinity in whose name all Christians are baptized.
The feast of the Blessed Trinity needs to be understood and celebrated as a prolongation of the mysteries of Christ and as the solemn expression of our faith in this triune life of the Divine Persons, to which we have been given access by Baptism and by the Redemption won for us by Christ. Only in heaven shall we properly understand what it means, in union with Christ, to share as sons in the very life of God.

LISTEN | Morning Prayer - June 3, 2023 | Memorial of St. Charles Lwanga and Companions, Martyrs
Today is the Memorial of St. Charles Lwanga and Companions (d. 1886), the companions numbering twenty-one other Ugandan martyrs. They are the first martyrs of Sub-Saharan Africa and true witnesses of the Christian faith. Charles Lwanga, a catechist and a young leader, was martyred in 1886 with a group of Catholic and Anglican royal pages, some of whom were not yet baptized. King Mwanga, who despised the Christian religion, gave orders that all the Christian pages in his service be laid upon a mat, bound, placed onto a pyre and burnt. This took place at Namugongo, just outside Kampala.
St. Charles Lwanga and Companions, pray for us!

LISTEN | Morning Prayer - June 2, 2023 | Memorial of Saints Marcellinus and Peter, Martyrs
Pope St Damasus I dedicated his life to establishing and strengthening the Church after the great persecutions, and took much care over the restoration of the Roman catacombs and the proper burial of the martyrs there, including Marcellinus and Peter.
As a boy, Pope Damasus had heard the story of these martyrs from their executioner. Marcellinus was a priest, Peter was an exorcist. They were beheaded during the emperor Diocletian’s persecution, and buried on the Via Labicana outside Rome. After the persecutions, a basilica was built over the site of their tomb.
