To help us make the transition from Mark’s Gospel to 1 Peter we will hear Peter’s message to Cornelius' household. The gospel tells the story of Jesus accomplishing redemption for all his people. The gospel also tells the story of the Holy Spirit applying redemption to all the people for whom Jesus poured out his blood.

So I exhort the elders among you, as a fellow elder and a witness of the sufferings of Christ, as well as a partaker in the glory that is going to be revealed: shepherd the flock of God that is among you. (1 Peter 5:1-2 ESV)

"And we know that for those who love God he works together all things for good, for those who are called according to his purpose."

She who is at Babylon, who is likewise chosen, sends you greetings, and so does Mark, my son. Greet one another with the kiss of love. Peace to all of you who are in Christ. (1 Peter 5:12-14 ESV)

Jesus is the man who breaks the rules that block us from having a loving relationship with him.

As you reflect on the story ask: How am I like this leper? Why do I need Jesus? What can Jesus do with my dirty flesh?

Jesus Christ is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities.

Sermon: Jesus the Crucible (Mark 5:21-24, 35-43)Then came one of the rulers of the synagogue, Jairus by name, and seeing him, he fell at his feet and implored him earnestly, saying, “My little daughter is at the point of death. Come and lay your hands on her, so that she may be made well and live.” And he went with him.

As obedient children, do not be conformed to the passions of your former ignorance, but as he who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, since it is written, “You shall be holy, for I am holy.” (1 Peter 1:14-16 ESV)
