Hezekiah was a true man of faith…but he wasn’t perfect. He was also known to fumble a time or two. When staring down the threat of an invading Assyrian army, Hezekiah fell back on the faith he had in God, the faith he maintained all his life. Yet when presented with the potential for a bit of pride, Hezekiah (like a lot of us) fumbled the ball. Our greatest threats might just be within us, and like Hezekiah, we might find ourselves fumbling toward the end.

Without question, it is difficult to consider the issue of apostasy. The Bible does not speak of these things so that we would walk around terrified, always scared that we might lose our salvation. Even so, there is an element of warning. God wants us to be aware of certain situations, simply because He wants us to avoid it altogether. Heed the warning and stick with Jesus!

We need a high priest, and God has gloriously given us one in Jesus. The more we grow in our knowledge of Him, the more we will cling to Him in faith!

We each will face the judgment of God as His word lays us bare before Him. Where is our hope of mercy and grace found? In Jesus, our great High Priest.

Who among us has never wrestled with pride? It is a battle common to all of us, and each of us can succumb, as seen in the lives of kings Amaziah and Uzziah. Constant vigilance is required for the Christian if we are to keep pride at bay, remaining humble before the Lord.

What exactly is the “rest” offered by God? To some, God’s rest was seen as a day, or perhaps as a land. The writer of Hebrews shows that it is neither; it is the person of the Lord Jesus Christ. Let us be diligent to enter the rest of God by believing upon Jesus in faith!

As wonderful as it was for the kingdom to be restored to the Davidic line following the threat of the usurping evil Queen Athaliah, Joash had his own mix of right and wrong. He was the right king, but (like all of us) it was possible for him to follow the wrong influences.

The writer of Hebrews provides an example from Israel’s past, which they ought to avoid: the nation’s initial failure to enter the Promised Land. Their lack of faith kept them out of the promise of God, and the same thing might happen with the current generation. Let us heed the warning! Don’t harden your heart to the promise of salvation in Jesus! Look to Him in confident faith and be saved!

The marriage into Ahab’s family introduced Ahab’s wicked influence into the Davidic line, resulting in murder, political chaos, and even the usurpation of the Davidic line itself. Spoiler alert: God’s promises never fail! His plan of salvation through Jesus does not depend on us, nor can even the devil put it at risk.
