The Apostle Paul pronounces the strongest possible warning against anyone who preaches another gospel: “Let him be accursed!” Yet throughout church history, the gospel has been distorted by human traditions and false teachings, making the Protestant Reformation necessary to recover the true gospel. In response, the Roman Catholic Church convened the Council of Trent, where it condemned justification by faith alone, invoking Paul’s anathema against the very gospel Paul proclaimed.

In a world of grumbling and complaining, Christians ought to be a people known for thanksgiving—a thanksgiving that goes beyond a feeling of gratitude and finds its proper end in the glory and enjoyment of God. In this passage, Paul insists that such thanksgiving is to characterize the whole of Christian life. So let us abound in thanksgiving to God as we ponder three glorious privileges that belong to Christians—namely, the Peace of Christ, the Word of Christ, and the Name of Christ.

We applaud those who work for big companies or represent nations and peoples. But there is a greater honor still—and it belongs to every Christian: representing the King of kings and Lord of lords. What does it matter if the world forgets your name, if you get to represent His Name? In this passage, we see the making of Christ's ambassadors, as King Jesus calls the Twelve, gives them instruction, and sends them out on their first mission. And in their commissioning, we learn valuable lessons about the holy task to which we have been called.

Jesus returned to His hometown of Nazareth, but instead of welcoming Him home, the people took offense at Him. How could those who were so privileged to know Jesus their whole lives still be found in unbelief? How is it possible that they were so astonished by the teachings of Jesus, yet still remained unbelieving in their hearts? This passage confronts us with a searching question: Has our familiarity with the Christian religion dulled our awe and wonder at Christ?

This is a tale of two daughters. Mark's literary contrast is fascinating. One daughter is twelve years old and is at the point of death. The other is twelve years into her suffering and is at the point of despair. One daughter was born into wealth and prominence. The other was driven to poverty and shame. But here's the main point of the story: daughters young and old, daughters of the rich and the poor, are all destitute under the curse of sin and death. Yet in our desperate need, there is only one hope—Jesus Christ, the Son of God.

A man possessed by a legion of demons and thousands of pigs rushing into the sea. This dramatic encounter with the spiritual realm is one of the strangest accounts in Scripture. While much of what we see in modern deliverance ministries is a fabrication of human imagination, we must not succumb to the skepticism of our age concerning the power and work of Satan. In this passage, we also see the supreme authority of the Son of God, who sets a miserable man free, restores him, and commissions him to be a living testimony.

Perhaps you've heard many sermons on it before—sermons about how Jesus can calm the storms in your life. But if that is all we take away from this text, we have missed so much of what Mark wants us to see and consider. As we observe this text, we find four different questions, raised by the disciples and Jesus Himself. And these four questions form a natural progression through the story, while at the same time confronting the readers about our fears, our faith, and ultimately, who we believe Jesus to be.

By all appearances, it seems that Christianity is losing and in sharp decline. It seems that the light of the gospel has been overwhelmed by the darkness of our culture and a Christian revival feels like a distant dream. However, Jesus would have us see things very differently. He would like to speak into our discouraged and despairing hearts. In this passage, Jesus gives us the framework for a theology of winning!

We examine one of Jesus' most famous parables, often called the Parable of the Sower. Because Jesus Himself explains its meaning, the greatest challenge is not interpretation but application. This parable is a mirror that reveals the true condition of our hearts and calls us to honest self-examination. How do you know whether you are good soil or self-deceived? Are you sure you are saved? Have you truly received the Word of God, or have you merely heard it?

His own family thought He was out of His mind, and the religious leaders accused Him of being demon-possessed and a servant of Satan. Why was Jesus so misunderstood and rejected? What is the blasphemy against the Holy Spirit? And who truly belongs to the family of God?
