This is a tale of two daughters. Mark's literary contrast is fascinating. One daughter is twelve years old and is at the point of death. The other is twelve years into her suffering and is at the point of despair. One daughter was born into wealth and prominence. The other was driven to poverty and shame. But here's the main point of the story: daughters young and old, daughters of the rich and the poor, are all destitute under the curse of sin and death. Yet in our desperate need, there is only one hope—Jesus Christ, the Son of God.

A man possessed by a legion of demons and thousands of pigs rushing into the sea. This dramatic encounter with the spiritual realm is one of the strangest accounts in Scripture. While much of what we see in modern deliverance ministries is a fabrication of human imagination, we must not succumb to the skepticism of our age concerning the power and work of Satan. In this passage, we also see the supreme authority of the Son of God, who sets a miserable man free, restores him, and commissions him to be a living testimony.

Perhaps you've heard many sermons on it before—sermons about how Jesus can calm the storms in your life. But if that is all we take away from this text, we have missed so much of what Mark wants us to see and consider. As we observe this text, we find four different questions, raised by the disciples and Jesus Himself. And these four questions form a natural progression through the story, while at the same time confronting the readers about our fears, our faith, and ultimately, who we believe Jesus to be.

By all appearances, it seems that Christianity is losing and in sharp decline. It seems that the light of the gospel has been overwhelmed by the darkness of our culture and a Christian revival feels like a distant dream. However, Jesus would have us see things very differently. We see yet another conflict between Jesus and the religious leaders. The point of contention here concerns the Sabbath. What is its purpose? And what is lawful on the Sabbath? The Pharisees saw Jesus as a breaker of the Sabbath, but they failed to see that He is the Author of the Sabbath! And as the Divine Author of the Sabbath, Jesus has all authority to define its purpose and regulations.

Jesus and His disciples were criticized for not fasting according to the religious customs of the day. However, beneath this controversy lies a deeper warning about the danger of religious piety without true understanding, judging spirituality by outward practices, elevating human traditions above God's Word, and ultimately missing Jesus Christ—the Bridegroom of His covenant people.
