I am joined by Celeste Jennings as we talk about her path to playwriting. She also shares how she combines the arts of costume design and writing to creatively stage the stories of black women as a means of both inspiring and educating—filling the chasm of a lack of black female representation both on and off stage.

Cross-gendered friendships from middle childhood through adulthood are often met with glances of curiosity or skepticism about the intentions of the individuals involved or the extent to which the nature of the friendship is entirely platonic. In a culture enamored by the sexual, celebrating intimacy in cross-gendered friendships is almost a foreign idea. Bronwyn Lea concerns herself with this subject in her book Beyond Awkward Side Hugs, as well as how it has tended to play out in the church. In today's episode we talk about friendship and its importance within church community through the lens of her book.
