In “Ouroboros”, we got to see into Andre’s psyche as the episode presented a dreamworld version of Snowpiercer. A “Dreampiercer”, if you will. Passengers on Snowpiercer are no strangers to death. Every mile they pass by the frozen world outside their windows, they roll by vast graveyards filled with what remains of the world before they got on the train. Once aboard, regardless of their status as ticketed or not, they were given a chance to outrun death thanks to Mr. Wilford’s Engine Eternal. But outrunning death doesn’t mean that it’s not right there at their heels, snatching at them and picking off those that lag behind.

In “Born to Bleed”, Pike and Layton tempt their tenuous relationships with each other and in turn with death itself. Using a dispute resolution tradition from their time in the tail, the former revolutionaries have to either talk through their differences – or be willing to kill for them.

Melanie Cavill is back! Kind of! TNT played a little trick on the legions of Snowpiercer fans by using clips of Melanie in the teasers for this week’s episode. They never actually said that she was back in flesh though, did they? So, we got head-versions from the perspectives of her daughter, Alex, and her mentor, the imprisoned Mr. Wilford. Throughout the episode, both characters turn to an embodiment of their memories of Melanie for counsel as the only person they trust to talk to.

Mr. Wilford always has something up his well-tailored sleeve, doesn’t he? Very much a no-risk / no-reward kind of guy, using an EMP (electromagnetic pulse) device -intentionally- against the world’s last piece of high technology would certainly have taken balls. And balls, ladies and gentlemen, is a topic where Mr. Wilford thinks of himself as something of an expert. Lots of -first-hand- knowledge.

And let’s not forget the happy occasion celebrating the wedding of the train’s favorite sociopaths. LJ has Mr. Wilford’s favor for now, but will she keep it? And in the long run, is that the right side of the conflict anyway? Does that even matter to a person like LJ?

Two trains, one fast and hot, the other slow and cold. Our mechanical versions of “The Tortoise and the Hare” pick up six months after the events of season2’s finale with different missions. With an eye toward the future, Layton and his pirate train aboard Snowpiercer’s engine endeavour to carry on Melanie’s work by collecting important climate-related data. Wilford, managing Big Sally and the other thousand cars, works instead to maintain a subservient status quo for a single working class under his thumb.
