When we clearly receive a calling but our hearts are consumed by fear and self-will, running away often becomes a human instinct. The prophet Jonah attempted to flee to Tarshish to hide from the Lord, yet amidst the turbulent waves of life and three days and three nights in the belly of a fish, he experienced God's sovereign environment and loving discipline. The fierce storms of life may seem violent, but they are not meant to destroy us; rather, they are the Heavenly Father's way of restoring and redeeming us out of love.
Jonah's choice during the storm to acknowledge his identity, sacrifice himself, and be cast into the sea clearly foreshadows Jesus Christ—the One who did not shrink back from His mission, willingly bore our sins, and rose again from the dead.
The true way out is always to turn to the Gospel. When we are willing to let go, stop running, and release our tight grip, God can fully take over. As long as we are willing to turn to God with our weaknesses, our hardened hearts will be softened by the Father's tender love, leading us to experience peace in the midst of the storm and renewing us to become a vessel for the voice of His Gospel.
