Preserves is a weekly podcast series on ways we can preserve the grey matter in our brains, so that we can live life as our most authentic selves.
Are you the kind of person who has a hard time saying no?
Let’s say a friend of yours is having a party tonight and you’ve been looking forward to a night to yourself for weeks now, so you already have your own plans for tonight but now, you feel like saying no to your friend’s invite would make you a bad friend, and so you convince yourself to go. That or you said yes at first but you flaked out later with an excuse you thought would pass off as believable. We’ve all been there...

If you had a ticket to the movie screening of your life on earth, how would you feel?
I’m not talking about a biopic that was made while you were still alive and one you had a say in, as to what parts were portrayed and which ones were left out.
I’m talking about a true depiction of it all: the highs & the lows, the joy & the heart break, the success & the failure.

When you think of the future, let’s say 15-20 years from now, what do you see?
Philosopher & writer George Santayana once wrote, “Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.” Over the years, that statement has proved to be true, based on much of what we see going on around us right now. In some ways, we’ve progressed, and in some ways, we’ve gone backwards.
We’re seeing more representation in movies, so folks that look like you, folks that look like me, folks that look like someone neither of us really know much about, and that’s a good thing. Our uniqueness lies in what makes us different.
But…we’re also seeing people in power, especially men in power, continuing to tell women what they can and can’t do with their bodies. So yes, our progress as a society is a mixed bag. But let’s take a step back from how the world is evolving & let’s talk about how you, as an individual with agency, can respond to it.

Does reading about love & loss hit the same way as when we go through them ourselves?
Do the pictures housed our phone’s gallery make us feel the same way as when we lived through those same moments in real life?
Do the lessons we learn in life seep deeper into our bones when they are learnt through our own lived experience?
Those are the questions that we’ll be addressing today.

I want you to think back to the last time you felt utterly and completely stuck. Literally or figuratively. How long did it take you to get unstuck? Or are you still stuck?
Time is a very interesting thing.
It’s interesting in the sense that there are 24 hours within any given day, and yet…we all experience those same 24 hours very differently.

Do you ever catch yourself thinking...why is this taking so long? Am I ever gonna get there?
Maybe that’s crossed your mind while commuting back home from work
Or when you’ve been doing great job at work for a long time and your manager keeps passing you over for a promotion
Or maybe you’ve been going out with someone that keeps giving you mixed signals
Like can’t we just skip to the part where life gets better?
But see, here’s the thing:
Skipping to the end takes away from the joy of the journey. A summit is only as glorious as the length & intensity of the path to it, and here’s why I believe that...

Would you say that you work to live or that you live to work?
Like if things at work are tense, do you find yourself bringing that tension back home with you? Even if you don’t mean to, objectively speaking, do you think it affects your energy for the remainder of the day after you’ve closed your laptop?
And that’s if you really ever log off. If you’re still responding to Slack pings on your phone while your dinner gets cold, you’re mentally still at work.
For the longest time ever, I’ve done the former, and it’s taken years of continued self reflection and inner work to realize how damaging that can be for the soul.

When was the last time you were a beginner at something?
It's one thing to be in a situation where you have no other choice but to be a beginner, like when your parents forced you to try out a new sport growing up or when you had to take a class in college because it was a degree requirement, like that’s different because you didn’t really choose it.
So it’s another thing when you yourself choose to be a beginner at something all over again. What makes a person actively choose to not be good at something, at least to begin with?
I think it’s a combination of different things, with the main ones being; reason & season.

When was the last time you read a book?
Not an audiobook
Not an e-book on your Kindle or iPad
I’m talking about a physical book, the one where you actually flip through the pages
