Pride and Prejudice Chapters 1-4

Listen Later

Meet Molly and Becca! We begin with an intro to who we are and where we stand on Jane Austen. Then we launch into Volume the First of Pride and Prejudice!

Chapter 1: We meet Mr. and Mrs. Bennet and discuss their mildly sexy banter. The hot gossip is that a very rich and very single man is moving into Netherfield Park, and Mr. Bennet needs to write to him. Highlights include the rules of etiquette then and now, Jane Austen fun facts, a nonexistent movie starring Kiera Knightly and Colin Firth, our badass moms, "Keep Calm and Austen On," Bennet roleplay, and of course, marrying for money.

Chapter 2: Mr. Bennet went to visit Mr. Bingley! Highlights include an overly dramatic Mrs. Bennet, IS KITTY SICK?, poor Mary, and your substitute teacher Zachary Quinto.

Chapter 3: Bingley isn't coming to dinner, but we get to meet him at the long-awaited ball. Highlights include THE ENTRANCE OF DARCY, Colin Firth???, dancing drama, and our new Hilary Duff/Rupert Grint OTP.

Chapter 4: Lizzy and Jane's Corner! Highlights include Charlie Bingley, Molly getting very riled up about Darcy, confusing money talk, the evolution of misogyny, and Bingley needing twelve opinions on his choices.

Study Questions:

We chat about the first line of the book (with a shout out to @el_silvero's FIRE tweet on the matter) and dating in the modern world.

Thoughts on the five Bennet sisters? We discuss middle children, Molly postulates that Lydia MIGHT be gay and Kitty MIGHT be sick. Lizzy would most likely be found at the Women's March, and Jane is an overall good person.

Bingley/Jane vs. Lizzy/Darcy? #projingley #antidizzy

Bingley/Darcy vs. Lizzy/Jane? We discuss friendship dynamics, extroverts and introverts, and how opposites attract. Molly makes some predictions about how the friendships will develop.

Funniest quote: "I'M SICK OF BINGLEY!" or "I can assure you that Lizzy does not lose much but not suiting his fancy. For he is a most disagreeable, horrid man, not at all worth pleasing. So high, and so conceited that there is no enduring him. He walked here, and he walked there, fancying himself so very great. Not handsome enough to dance with! I wish you had been there, me dear, to have given him one of your set-downs. I quite detest the man."

Question moving forward: What does Bingley see in Darcy?

Who wins the chapter?: Mrs. Bennet!
