Once again, Pride March revealed the breadth and depth of our wide community to the general public in a wonderful display of colour and movement, despite the heat. It also gave marchers and supporters an opportunity to view the winning entry for the future Pride Centre – to be centrally located on our march route.

We recognise the ever-expanding ‘trans’ community as Gender Dysphoria (or gender non-conformity) loses its mystery and becomes another part of the wide spectrum of gender identity. We give examples of 3 people who have successfully transitioned to their chosen identity – Di from Violet Town, Victoria; Dana International (Sharon Cohen born 2/2/1972) – Israel’s Eurovision winning entry; and Angela Moreley – UK, (died 14/1/2009 – born 10/3/1924 as Wally Stott), who maintained her award winning career of musical composition for TV & films and as an orchestral conductor.

We note that as well as the usual Australia Day March in the city which included groups of our new citizens proudly representing their ethnicity, a protest march occurred presenting the objections of some first peoples to the symbolism of the Day. Of more interest was a large contingent of the general population who marched in their support. This demonstration of ‘consciousness-raising’ seems to show increased confidence and willingness since the Same-Sex Marriage debate, for the general citizenry to show and be counted.  Politicians – take note of the people!

We discuss technological advances likely to replicate in a smart-phone app of the functionality of our Myki travel card, but note the unwanted GPS tracking of wearers of ‘fitness performance’ devices.

In this era of plentiful supply and 24-hour supermarkets, there was a not-so-distant time in Australia’s past during wartime when food was scarce and availability was rationed by a scheme whereby residents could only purchase a small amount of meat, flour or butter (for example) per week in exchange for an entitlement voucher issued to eligible residents. Such a concept is difficult to imagine these days, but what will happen to food supplies in the future with climate change and population pressures?
